New website hosting for MM

Postby mattloflin » Wed Feb 08, 2017 9:15 am

Hi All -

As many of you know, the last couple months (years to some...) have been plagued with ups & downs for the website. Performing slow at times and, most recently, the forum going down and then being restored to early January.

Some of this is unavoidable and every website will have times when it goes down. However, by choosing the right hosting provider we can limit these odds and improve the site performance.

Starting today, Feb. 8th, 2017 at ~1:30PM EST I'll be starting the transfer from HostDone to BlueHost. BlueHost is an American owned company with 24x7 butt-in-seat support agents and has received many 4 and 5 star ratings. It returns at the top of the list when looking for the best PHPBB hosting providers (our forum software).

My expectation is that the site will be down for roughly 24-48 hours - most of that time being transferring the domain name and the internet recognizing it's new location.

Thanks for your continued patience and dedication... we'll be better soon enough. :yeah:

Everyone - we've run into a pickle with our existing hosting provider :wall: - they may be making us wait 7 days to complete the URL transfer (Feb. 13th...).

No worries though, I went ahead and moved everything (Website, Files, Database) to our new hosting provider and setup this temporary URL so that we could continue with the forum while we wait.

All posts, registrations, classifieds, number of posts, EVERYTHING will be kept.

Think of this like moving into a new house and having to go through mail forwarding and updating all your addresses. Once the transfer completes, it'll simply be back to http://www.modernmuzzleloader.com/ - all else intact.

Let me know if you run into any issues or if stuff seems off.

Enjoy.

Some users have experienced issues logging in. Clear the cache / cookies / history on your browser and try again.

Just saw this temporary board. Thanks for working on it. I have no doubt it will be worth it when all is said and done.

I'm a new member, and I really appreciate all the work people are doing behind the scenes to make it work!

I've done a share of websites stuff in other settings and I know the workload!

Thank you also to those who contributed financially to make it happen!

The migration is complete! We are now on our new host and the domain name is back to http://www.modernmuzzleloader.com.

Some users may need to clear their cookies/cache/history to be able to log back in.

Everything should be just like it was left. Over the next couple of days I'll be double checking that the backups are occurring & that data is properly flowing.

If you run into any issues, send me a PM or start a thread in the Help forum.

Just tried going to modernmuzzleloader.com. Still tells me the website is down and to use the temporary one. Cleared cookies, cache, etc. and still no bueno. Am I doing something wrong?

I should have mentioned that too.. the domain change is complete and it takes 24-28 hours to propagate throughout the rest of the internet. Some (most?) users will see the new domain automatically, others will get the update between now and end of day tomorrow (Feb. 15th).

Anything past Feb 17th would likely be an issue.

I had to clear cache and cookies. I also had to clear the "remember me" keys in preferences. I was able to login but i had to log in everytime even though i had it set to remember me.

It seems fine now.

Thank you Matt and Hal.

I'm using Firefox on my Mac and once I cleared the cache and history it worked each time and remembered me.

And he doesn't even own a muzzleloader! I got a couple with his name on them though.

Hello I purchased a estate of guns and included was this .45 Cal Winchester Apex rifle, the condition of the barrel is not good seeing it has set loaded for at least 7 years. So anyway I would like to replace the barrel, it’s a 29” barrel made in Spain and in my research of this Winchester I am being told that CVA was the company that built this for Winchester in there short history of Muzzle Loaders.
Thanks in advance if you can help me restore this unit, I am a collector of all Winchester guns.
:D
