I had an opportunity to hunt the past several days in Western KS. We have hunted this land for the past decade with good success during the late season. The one effort with a MZ in the early season yielded a fine 8 point after a whopping 45 minutes on the stand.
This year was our first real effort and I learned several lessons:
1) Bugs are a real problem.
2) Lots of cover with the crops unharvested.
3) Deer don't move much in the summer.
4) The fawns are small in September.
Despite all of the above, my hunting partner took an 8 point with a V2 Optima and a 300 SST. The 300 SST did a fine job with complete pass through.
Moving forward, I will wait for the late season to hunt deer.
