Well Lord have mercy, it is a blue WhiteHot

GM54,

I had my hopes that it might be a new product. Too bad.

Thanks for the info.

Im wondering how Alliant can make the claim of "Highest velocity at safe pressure" than any other available pellet when its clearly a IMR Whitehot and Hodgdon holds the patent.

BTW, APP cant make a round pellet because of this patent.

Well it has to be the super duper blue dye, of course. What else could it be? :huh?:

Its really sad Alliant wouldn't or couldn't buy the original BlackMag patent and produce it themselves. The last version of BlackMag was a reasonably good powder.

Alliant had bought the latest version of Black Mag powder and and had advertised same. Then the plant blew up and burned up. The plant owner is serving two consecutive 10 year sentences in federal prison.

Black Mag powder was ascorbic acid based like the APP made powders. It contains huge quantities of potassium perchlorate.

Alliant powder is a Vista Outdoor company.

I know this about MDM but read my post again.

MDM/Magkor was producing it, not Alliant. What is preventing Alliant from producing it themselves? Ive never seen anything that says they bought the patent rights from Magkor.

Magkor Industries in Florida was the actual "owner" of BlackMag powder. W Lee Heorn was/is the owner. Their website is gone but it appears the company still exists.

I do find it interesting that Alliant chose to go with IMR for the BlueMZ pellets instead of APP though. It tells me that Alliant has zero desire to actually make a black powder sub themselves.

Notice the Magkor name on the bottle?

The MagKor "Black Mag3" was taken over by MDM Muzzleloaders in Colebrook, NH. This product was scheduled to be marketed by ATK as "Alliant Black Dot.

This was the original URL for Blackmag 3 http://www.magkor.com/blackmag.html

Blackmag2 was made by a company called ARCO which i cant find out much info on except for they went out of business and also had a fire resulting in injuries.

The last formulation was Black Mag'XP. Explosion killed a couple of the employees, and that was the end.

Here is an old thread that was posted before the explosion. This was Black Mag Industries, and was connected to MDM.

Magcor was producing the 3rd variation of black mag powder. Originally arco black mag. http://www.blackpowderjournal.com/archives/vol1no4/articles/blackmag.htm (about 2006) Magcor was rumored to be in negotiations for a merger with MDM (who also produced Black Mag3 for a time about 2008-2010) MDM had a powder plant explosion and in about 2010 and went under. (the Co. in production at the time in the RW link) During this time availabiltity was sporadic at best, and its use was hindered by a ~$30 lb price tag at the time. Seems it has had an uphill battle against the cards the whole way. It HAS had positive reviews from everyone I can find, including Doc White. This fact must be the main contributor to its tenacity to persevere.

All the talk about BlackMag, I was at a flea market 2 weekends ago and a gentleman had 4 containers of this stuff, they are now in my inventory of powder to burn,

It was actually Black Mag Industries, and Black Mag'XP as early as December 2008. This was under the MDM umbrella already at that time I think. They were producing the powder at a plant in either VT or NH (CRS, and too lazy to look today) when the explosion occurred.

The links are broken in this thread but, this will show the timeline.

I bought a 24 pack of the Alliant Blue MZ pellets... I figured I will give it a go at the range on Monday.

I will give my review once I am done.

How did the cost of the blue Alliant White Hots compare to the cost of the original IMR White Hots? The IMRs were already the most expensive propellant per shot of any sub powder.

Pricing of the IMRs run about $25-30 per 72 at Cabelas, Gander Mountain and Bass Pro. Roughly 35 cents per pellet plus tax using the Cabelas pricing and 41 cents using the others.
