Being that most ML are similar in speed to .22. I did a simple test to visually see the bullet speed of a sub-sonic vs high velocity at impact.
2 identical Mauser rifles set in Workmate benches.
Tried to pull triggers simultaneously and aim impact at nearly same spot.
Left - Rem CBee 33gr @ 740fps
Right - CCI Stinger 32gr @ 1640fps
These are advertised speeds of their respective data.
300 yards fully across the water, impact looked to be near 200 yards.
Note the duck on the water to the left of the impact area who dove at the report of the rifles.
