Any thoughts on barrel length ? You know what steel Oregon uses for barrels?
If it were me I would go with 22" from BP to muzzle for a hunting rifle. Mine is 26 and its ok for the bench but a tad heavy in he woods. Not sure but I thought someone said it was 4140 steel.

Oregon's base barrels are 12L14. Getting mine in 4140 was a $100 upcharge.

Still waiting for the barrel, Got the action all clean, I'm definitely dyna-coating it. Got a spring ordered to replace the old striker spring. I've also installed a pillar at the rear action screw and filled the area in the stock were the barrel threads in for bedding. Carbon fiber tube to install in the forearm for the ram-rod. I was told 90 days for the barrel but they never take that long so I'm clueless as to when I'll have it but I'm at the point, all work has stopped.

Ordered the Dura Coat so I'll coat the action if the barrel didn't show before the epoxy. Going to drive in and pick up some 416 stainless for the breech plug. I plan on a flat faced breech plug with a tapered channel back to the nipple. Only restriction will be nipple flash hole. I'm planning around 1 inch of 5/8 18 threads for the plug.

Barrel came today hope to get it set up in lathe tomorrow.

Action is on the barrel.
Left to do: Bore and thread for breech plug, make breech plug, taper and crown, thimbles.

Looking good so far. :yeah: Have you decided on a straight taper or double to get weight down? Muzzle Diameter?

Breech plug
Cross feed was acting a little sluggish so I pulled it apart had a couple chips in it I bought the lathe used several years ago. Have always wanted to do this now I'm putting some time in these parts don't need to crash one.
Hope to have it back together Monday.

Kept thinking I'd start long but I chopped it off 22 1/2.

That should be a good length. I don't see that will hurt anything and should help make it a great woods rifle for those tree rats.
Do you plan to leave it round, will make it easier to contour I'm sure?

Here it is almost done except the Dura Coat. Have a little scraping on the stock the barrel is larger near the action now. I just stepped the barrel after I tried a straight taper but it was going to be large.

Looks Great! :yeah: Do you happen to have a scale, I am curious to see what it will weigh?

By the way is that also a step at the end of the Forend?

I have not put it on a scale, that barrel is pretty big still. It does handle OK but I don't think it's under 7 LBS or anything I would call light.

Yep I stepped it like Mauser barrels. It's still a little over .8 at the muzzle.

It fits the stock now ramrod is in the stock and I'm making a thimble. Just need to set the length on the breech-plug and I can shoot it.
I stepped on the scale with it just over 6 LBS. I think it might come in right around 7 LBS when done.
