Just curious among the balastic specialist here what their ideas are concerning the differences between the 44mag rifle and a 45 caliber muzzleloader. Input?

If you wish to shoot pistol bullets at pistol speeds, then I'd say their about equal.
Most ML today shoot pistol bullets much faster than the 44 Mag. Then there are others who shoot 500gr +/- rifle bullets at 44 Mag speed.
I hope it makes since.

The 44 magnum rifle has a considerably lower muzzle velocity and energy (approx.example: 1,350fps/1,214fpe/300gr bullet) than what inline 45cal muzzleloaders are capable of (approx. example: 2,000fps/2650fpe/300g bullet), thus less velocity and energy over any given distance with identical weight bullets. Taking nothing away from the 44mag, it can be a great short range deer or bear round.

A 45cal ML is closer to a 444 Marlin than a 44 Mag. Most people though dont shoot a 200gr out of a 444 or shoot a 45cal sabotless with a 250-300gr bullet either so the comparison is somewhat flawed. I can and have shot a 300gr sabotless in mine and im close to 2100fps without exceeding recommended load data

Shooting a 200gr bullet in a sabot at 2200fps is a walk in the park. You will never get close to that with a 44Mag but a 444 certainly could with ease.

I can get 1460 fps chronographed out of a .44mag G2 Contender fairly easily with only a 12 inch barrel. So i dont think a 20 inch 44 mag rifle would have a problem being around 1600fps. But that is still not the equivalent of a .45 cal inline. Its fairly easy to get over1950 fps with 250 grain pistol bullets with 100 grain charges of BH209 and even 1850 with 300 grain.

My 45 would easily out perform any 44 mag. I am shooting a 409 gr paper patched 11mm RCBS rifle bullet. I am getting 1410 fps out of it. I have the same FPE at 150 yards that my 44 mag with 300 grain bullets has at the muzzle.
