I have a Slufoot converted H&R 45/70 barrel in the mail headed my way. BH209 is an option, but I wanna give smokeless a try. Im looking to shoot 180 grain--200 grain 40 cal bullets. I dont need 2500 fps. Most of my shooting is at or less than 100 yards. So I d be happy with 1900--2000 fps. Also this is going to be a lightweight rifle for treestand use. Let me know what works for you.

If thats all the speed you want, look no further than about 31-35gr of SR4759, N110 or maybe 5744. IIRC around 38gr of 4759 is getting close to 2400fps.

35gr SR4759 and a 200gr SST or 195 Barnes in a blue Harvester sabot is a nice soft recoiling load that will get the job done. If you have H or IMR4198 55gr is a nice load also that will get you close to 2400fps.

Ok shot the 45/70 conversion today. I was a bit rushed, I had my 7 year old with me & it is cold out. I went with 45 gr of H4198 crush rib sabot & 200 gr SSTS pretty happy the way it shoots so far . I wanted to try some other combos, but the boy was getting antsy.

Im learning that this load is a bit light, but Im sticking with it for now. I may play around a bit with different powders & bullets this spring. but the crush rib sabot seemed like a nice tight fit.

56-57grs. of IMR4198 with light blue harvester sabot, 200gr SST and CCIM primer holes touch at 100yds in my Encore/Bergara Slufoot conversion.

what kinda FPS are you getting with that load. Also do you have any ignition problems . I ve heard 4198 is temp sensitive.

Running 4198 that low will cause pressure (lack of) and you'll have issues with ignition.

Can you get your hands on any shotgun powder? I realize 4759 is discontinued but if you can get your hands on that, it would be the way to go. I'll look at some load data and see if I can find anything.

I was thinking 5744 also however I did find a load that shoots the 200 SST @ 1700. You can work up a load from there. 17 grains of blue dot. Maybe 20 grains would get you over 2000 not sure though.

You are perfectly fine using H4198. 55-60gr will get you in the neighborhood of 2300-2600 FPS. Keep your breech plug clean of carbon build up. Thats where a lot of the ignition issues come from.
