I thought I'd missed the fall mushroom season this year but then this is Minnesota and things change in minutes so one never knows. Ma was doing some fall garden work and came across this future meal covered with leaves. This hen is about a foot across, not huge by any means but it will provide some serious chews for a couple meals.
Hen and chicks mushrooms are one of my favorite fall mushrooms. So after clearing the leaves from it I took a walk around and checked my shitaki logs thinking that the cool, but not cold, temps of late maybe fired up a late fall flush of those mushrooms too, but nada. That's ok, I take this hen any day.
