I have been doing a lot of pheasant hunting and success has been very good especially for Wi. on public hunting grounds. I usually take the younger dogs pheasant hunting as it can be quite tough but my old dog always begs me to go ,Well today I said Emma come on along she jumped in the front seat of the truck and was very excited seems she only goes to the vet in the truck. But they know. We got to the hunting grounds and after a little while, the young dogs put up a rooster which I actually hit
While I was field dresing it Emma was on point (Lab that Points) I said Emma we got that one Then a large rooster exploded from the prairie grass. I quickly picked up my shotgun and lucked out and Emma retrieved it with great style. That was our limit, when we got back to the truck I put the young ones in back (old road) and looked for Emma and she was on point. nuff said, Boy that old dog was so proud. She jumped in the truck with a big smile and seemed to say see Dad I can still do it.
Now she is laying here all tired out and I will catch it when my wife gets home. I know what Emma is thinking though, Lets do it again tommorrow.
Amen to that. Redclub

Thanks for sharing that RC. I always wonder what they are dreaming about when their paws are quivering and they are wimpering...

Great story Redclub. Thanks for sharing. I bet it is priceless to see old dogs eyes lighten up when she is going hunting.

great story! i got an ole female black lab thats a quail specialist hehe....she snorts like a pig and bounces like a pup when i take her out....shes got one of the best noses and biggest hearts but shes not built to match (displasya) one bonus to that is she doesnt move fast enough to walk past a bird and not too fast for old or young hunters . old smart dogs rule!!!

 I had last week off to chase ditch chickens, started out last Saturday sick,so that shot the opener. Sunday comes around and I feel much better! I have a 10yr old Chocolate lab called Chip and a 1 year old Yellow lab called Ginger, they were willing and ready to go. 7 of us limited out in about 4 hours, not one lost bird. Monday comes and 5 of us hunted 6hrs to get our limit! Not one lost bird, the old dog is begining to so wear but won't give up. Tuesday I left Chip home to heal and took young Ginger . what a blast She would work 25 to 30 yards back and forth and check in every 5 minutes. 4 of us were 1 short of our limit after 5- 6 hours, again no lost birds. Wednesday I hurt and took the day off for honey does. Thursday went out with my friend bob and his son, good ground but got skunked. Friday was the same as Thursday, start to wonder whats going on, The old dog is a hurting unit but wont give up just like he has something to prove !! Saturday 6 of us get together start hunting, no BIRDS[ Whats up with that] same ground as Last Saturday. About noon we started to get into birds, I meen birds ,must have saw 50 to 100 roosters limited out at about 2pm.Still no lost birds. Sunday everyone is hurting , Chip won't get up, so I tell him thats ok and he can sleep in. Started loading the truck up and there he is just begging to go.I feel sorry for him because I know how I feel. He hops in the truck and won't get out! Figure he could sleep there while Ginger and I hunted. Get on site, He's sleeping and snoring away.Got ginger out and there he is again. Well let me tell you, He hunted like he was 4yrs old ,pointed 4 roosters in about 1hr. I got 2 and said enough. Just got to love um

They really are amazing, That is mind over matter Big Time,
When I get home my wife says how can you do that to those poor dogs Look they can hardly get on the couch. Never mind my old legs,
Poor dogs are hurting. Just try to get out without them.

:( They are bred to hunt and thats what they love to do! Not a worry in the world besides pleasing their owners which at this age is an easy chore

:) been out chasing pheasants in Iowa for a week now, Have had some good days and some bad. Havn't been shunked yet but been close.
Yesterday,I took my son Richard [12] with me, what a good day we had,
Started out walking CRP nothing! Walked across the road to a weed patch, and the dogs( Chip[11], Ginger[2 1/2] )went crazy :D :D , told Richy to get ready and the birds just keep coming. I counted 10 roosters
in all I took 1,and my Buddies took 4, Richy said He missed his ,but owell.
Next we picked up a couple more,Richy missed again owell, This is how a went for the next few hours, finialy I'm getting tired but Richy wants to try one more spot, Pull up and the dogs are Birdy right off the bat, Richy is ready this time, a rooster gets up and I wait and wait and wait,He pulls up and shots, down comes that old rooster :D :D The old dog runs to pick it up but he doesn't have the energy to bring it back owell, I now have an
HUNTING ADDICT on my hands. He's got church school right now , right
after that we're headed out again, I need help, This kid won't stop, whats a dad to do?? Good luck and be safe out there

Great stories guys. I hope my dog is still hunting when she gets that old. One day we are going to get out that way and try some of those pheasants. For now though, we will have to be happy with ducks and quail.

I feel sorry for old chip every morning after the hunt but I would feel worst looking at those sad eyes, knowing This might be his last year :( So take them out,Be gentel, and keep their honor :D Youg dogs are fun but you'll never prove an old dog wrong
Have fun and be safe

old dogs hunting

I know how you feel. I have my 12 year old chocolate lab at home this week when his younger half brother ( 8yrs old) is out hunting Pheasants
in Nebraska this week.

My old chocolate lab still wants to hunt but he is enjoying the extra food scraps since he is the only dog at home this week.

Choc-dog

I went out last saturday, picked up my limit of 3, the snow was 2' deep in the switch grass and i wasn't smart enouth to wear chaps. The dogs worked great and had to have pointed and flushed 75-100 hens. It was a day full of stupids  I was walking thru the switch grass, when mother nature decided it was time to get rid of some coffee, 2 roosters got up right at my feet, wrong gun in hands,by by birdy :p Later after walking a buffer strip I pushed a rooster into the road ditch , my browning has magazine lock so you can have a open camber and shells in the magazine, do I need to say more??By By birdy Still had a great day :p Can someone help me post some pics?
Have fun and be safe

Here I go again :D :bored: Went out last saturday what a blast, started out purty slow but got better as the day went on We ended up with 18 birds  Pulled up to the last spot , open the truck door and the birds just start flying, We take our time and load up, let the old dog out he goes about 20 feet and locks up on point ( wish I had my camera with me instead of my shotgun) Up comes a rooster, down comes a rooster, next the young dog goes on point same thing :D What a great day :D The youngster right beside me actualy shot a triple, one of which ran about 1/8 mile with the dogs on it's tail !! I'll try to post some pics latter
