hi am looking for a boykin pup hopfully in michgan area thanks clint

If you haven't owned one of these dogs, you will love the dog. I have a female that is the smartest dog I have owned and I have owned all types of breeds.

Here are just a few pics of her.

Charlotte is almost three years old and she is my main running partner. The wife and I spoil her rotten. Boykins are really awesome dogs. You need to check the breeder out really well though.

Reccomend you visit the Boykin Spaniel Society Site. They have a puppy buyers guide.

Good luck with your new pup.

Nice looking pup. Are you going to train her to retrieve? Charlotte duck hunts and does upland.

yes want to hunt upland she will fetch her sock and ball at seven week old hope this is a good sign clint

That's a very good sign. Just make sure you keep it simple and fun for the first few weeks. Teach her sit, here and fetch. Basics for no more than 15-30 minutes at a time. Again keep it playful. Their attention span isn't that great at that age. Lots of play and bonding. Socialization with other dogs and people is also important. When Char was a pup I would try to take her on little adventure walks as much as I could. We have local nature park that we go to all of the time. She has the whole thing memorized. When I cut her loose, she heads straight for the creek or the pond!!

Here are a few links to some really good training books. The first one has a lot of specifics for Upland. The second one was written by a full time Boykin Breeder/Trainer.

I am not a pro or anything, but I work with a friend of mine that is. He is the one of the only trainers that thinks the way I do. We both do not like "Force Fetching". It is a technique that is described in most of these books. We both believe it takes away from a dog’s drive and style. It is a quick way for pro trainers to break a dog and then train dogs faster. I peronally don't like it. I want a dog to do something because it wants to, not because it knows that if it doesn't, force of some kind will be used against it. The trick is to be able to figure out a way to get the dog to want to do it. This is not usually hard with Boykins. They have a strong will to please their master. They are what we call a soft dog and do not require a lot of force in training. Too much forceful training could put a Spaniel off of birds and hunting for good!!! We also use a training collar very little. Usually just a nick if the dog is acting up or breaks the whistle. Sometimes, just like us they too can have a bad day.

Hope all of this helps. If you have any questions or just want to talk Boykins or Bird hunting, just PM me and I will give you my email address.
If you are a professional or have trained many dogs, I apologize for all of my rambling.
