The World Long Range ML Championship is currently underway in Camp Butner, NC sponsored by the Muzzle Loading Association International Committee. Got a text last evening from one of the USA shooters stating 11 countries and over 60 shooters are competing. It's a week long shoot, shot at Mid-range (300, 500 & 600) and Long Range (800, 900 & 1000), shot both as individuals and team events are both ranges.
This match is held every 2 years and alternates between 4 countries. USA, England (Bisley), South Africa and next Australia.
Traditional and reproduction percussion rifles, shot on V-bull targets.

Encore50A, you think it's hard to go to Friendship for the 1st time and understand the format - try doing it with in a squad of shooters who can't or barely speak any English!

Got a call this evening/update about the match:
Mid-range: the South African team won and USA 2nd. SR team: Frank Monakowski, Dave Gullo, Lee Shaver, Ray Hanson. Alt: Art Fleener & Kenn Heismann
900 was shot today (there is no 800, just 900 & 1000 at LR) Art Fleener shot a 67-4V/75. This was a World Record for an original rifle (John Rigby: 75gr Swiss & 528gr PP) and possibly a WR overall at 900 including reproductions.
Friday is 1000 and Team LR in the afternoon. Award ceremony Saturday night..

Many of the foreign shooters have indicated they are coming to Friendship. That is great timing to get to see some old friendly faces...

15 shots. 5V international targets (we're used to shooting 10x targets)

What kind of groups do they shoot at 900 yds? Would be awesome to see them in action

Here are the results of the match for both team and individual overall.
For the Mid-Range: 10 shots each at 300, 500 & 600: shot with sling
Long-Range 15 shots each at 900 & 1000: shot with sling & wrist rest or x-stick.
Teams are 4 shooters from each country; which is shot independently of the individual matches.

Here are the target scoring sizes for the International V-bull (5,4,3,2,1) targets:
300 - V-3.3", 5(bull)-5.5", 4(inner)-11", 3(magpie)-16.5", 2(outer)-22", 1-Hit
500- V-6.3", 5-10.5", 4-26", 3-39", 2-52", 1-Hit
600- V-7.8", 5-13", 4-26", 3-39", 2-52", 1-Hit
900- V-14.4, 5-24", 4-48", 3-72", 2-96", 1-Hit
1000- same as 900

If im understanding scores correctly these guys are shooting a 4 or better every shoot to be at the top

Just when I thought I was getting a grasp on Friendship..................

Yes its pretty neat at that velocity and bullet weight.
Better not be any low flying aircraft near range.

Hal:
The only press I can think of will probably be from Pedersoli. Many of their Gibbs reproductions were being shot..
Percussion side locks with Vernier sights like on Quigley's Sharps rifle.
Only 3 sighters and once you hit paper, your score starts. If you hit on your first shot and your next shot is not on paper - too bad. You get no communication from the pit except which side of the target the pit guy THINKS your shot went - there is no backstop behind the targets like at Friendship.
These matches were recreated around the turn of the 21st century to reflect the origins of Long Range shooting in its hayday toward the end of the 19th century. 1874 was the first ever International match in Creedmoor NY. ML vs BL; 10's of thousands were trained in to watch..

bestil:
Scopes are a tremendous advantage with a modern in-line along with ignition; original guns were limited to 10# max weight & 3# min trigger pull.

When does this match come back to the states and where is it competed. Would be a great competition to watch?
There is no doubt new technology has changed long range shooting but i would love to try a match similar to this with modern muzzleloaders.

Australia -2017
South Africa - 2019
Bisley, England - 2021
USA - 2023

Unless something changes.

Bestill, you need a pedersoli Gibbs in 451 so you can practice with it to compete in the match in 2023 when it is in the USA
Boy have I got a deal for you ...
