OK, I finally got it. I have a Thompson Center Hawken cap lock in 50 Cal and it has a Green Mountain 1:28 twist barrel with a 22 inch barrel. I put on the Fiber Optic sights with open sights. Using a Hornady .430 HP/XTP - 240 grains and a Harvester Crush Rib sabot - with 90 grains of ffG (GOEX) black power with a lot date of circa 1982, I can get an three shot with a one inch group on a 2 inch bull?s-eye at 50 yards.

That is close enough to kill a whitetail deer at 50 ? 60 yards.

Not bad for a 62 year old fart, if I must say.

Next year I plan casting my own bullets and hunt with a flint lock.

Sounds good Robert. You've got to love those Green Mountain fast twist barrels. I have one on a Renegade (with a scope) and one on a Hawken with peep sights. They're the long barrels, not the 22" one. But boy, do they shoot.

I have the same barrel in flintlock. And I agree, it is a good shooter. You are ready to hunt deer it sounds like. Good luck.
