Hi All
I found a nearly new condition Lyman 56s for my Savage 99EG.
The rifle is superb condition and currently wears a Lyman 30 1/2 tang sight. I like the tang, red line cool factor, but the 56s has precise, repeatable adjustments, and is also exceptionally cool...
However, a quick mount shows the need to remove a bit of wood to have the sight mount properly.
The rifle has only a few minor stock dings and is nearly perfect otherwise. I don't forsee further sight changes, but I'm still a bit torn over what to do.
If she were yours...

That's a tough decision. I've seen pictures of a few stocks that were hacked and a few that were tastefully done. I'm glad it's not my choice. I would hack it, Lol

There are two ways to look at it. Mounting the sight by altering the stock devalues the rifle, and good examples of that rifle are not common.

The second way to look at it is that you bought it to use. Modifying it to make it more useable makes sense.

It is a personal choice, and personally I would not cut the stock.
