So my severe carpal tunnel syndrome and subsequent surgery has kept me off the water but doc said if I could cast with my brace on I could fish. I joined a saltwater fly fishing group within RISAA and went to a recent outing to see if I'd be able to fish.

As it turns out I was able to fish for almost three hours. As a bonus, I managed to catch my first flyrod striper on a black fly with a purple body. A beautiful 25 or so incher. It was right at the turn of the tide to incoming. That hurt so good ! Not sure the wrist would have held up to much more of that. When I left I went downstream of the bridge and cast to a rising fish and caught my first hickory shad!

Went back three days (dawn) this week and caught at least two or three decent fish each day. Photo is of a 24 inch striper. Reel is being held in the air maybe a foot above the fish.

Caught them with a Grey's 8 weight fly rod, floating line with six foot sink tip, furled flourocarbon leader, 3 feet 10 pound tippet and a trout or steelhead fly. Zonked streamer I think it is called. The one I used looks like this except purple body. Lost that one today after 15 fish this week . Fly is about 2.75 to 3 inches number 6 hook. Not really a striper or saltwater fly.

:thumbs up:
What hours were you fishing.... and was your trip coordinated with the tide?

Last night 8:50 pm to 10:45 pm. I've been starting or staying til dark. Usually 430 am to 7:00 am or 7:00 pm to 10 pm. The spots I've fished seem better at outgoing but I'm just scratching the surface from what I can tell. Unlimited possibilities if you throw in a kayak for access. I've been just walking and wading thus far.

It's nice to be able to drive 10-15 minutes with just rod and small chest pack, fish a couple of hours and then go back home. Great opportunities

Haven't slayed them yet but I'm sure I will eventually. If I can catch a few fish and a lager fish 24 inches or bigger on the eight weight, I'm grinning from ear to ear. I've fished like 16 times in last 20 days. Sometimes only for 2 hours but nice to get away from crowds early and late. Eventually I'll hit the open coast with eels and spingear for bigger bass.

No.marty I agree it really doesn't, I'm not sure why. I think Joe was maybe higher on the sand bar or something. May have been 24, made it about 4 inches shy of the mark on my rod for a legal sized fish at 28; inches. Have caught over a handful of fish in the 24 -25 inch range. Many smaller as well. 5 fish last night biggest 21 inches. Got chased off by lightning unfortunately.

Tough night tonight. Wind in my face and alot of grass and weeds in water. Fished from sunset into dark without a bite 1.5 hours and thought about going home but took a break and changed from a blue zonker to a black which was bigger. Fought the wind for another 15 minutes and was rewarded with a nice 26 inch fish. My second largest with flyrod. Great fight.
Fished and Fought wind for additional 45 minutes and decided to call it a night.
