My .504 cal M98 Elite Hunter came with a musket cap BP. A few years back I had to purchase a stronger spring from Doc due to misfires. It is the only ML that I own with a musket BP. I am not a fan of this plug and was considering swapping out one of my other no.11 BPs from one of my other White's. The no.11 is much easier to cap using my no.11 capper especially when scope is attached. I am not sure if there is a big difference especially since I use the hot RWS caps. Seems like the no.11 would be more rain proof for hunting as well. Also it is next to impossible capping the plug with a musket capper when scope is attached. It is too fat and bulky to get the under the scope to get the musket cap on.
Question; Is there a major difference between the 2 plugs as far as ignition, performance or something I might be missing?

Not really much difference between the two. In talking to Doc, he said he prefers using Musket caps when he knows the game he's hunting can bite him back. grin. I just find Musket caps to put on and remove with bare fingers. Sometimes #11 caps can be difficult to remove in the field and may need to be pried off. I personally use RWS Musket caps and believe they are hotter than RWS #11 caps, but I can't prove it.

Because I hunt with all of my young grandsons I have all of my Whites setup with Musket Cap breech plugs.

I have no experience with musket cap BP. I shoot RWS #11 caps with Goex FFG and now SwissFFG. Never a miss fire and immediate ignition ( White Bison 504 & 54) The #11s fit so tight I believe it is a very water tight seal, I have to pry them with the back of my belt knife while hunting...if I don't shoot that is.

A #11 cap breech plug will light the powder just fine. Either plug will work well. It's just a matter of personal preference.

What Harleyboss and Hatchet Jack said is dead on. That is why I use Musket Caps while hunting with grandkids. Plus it is a pain to remove #11 caps with your knife. Other than that #11 caps work great.

I like the musket I have all mine set up with it but the 11 does just fine if you want I have some number 11 ill trade for your musket

I have used both Musket Caps, #11 caps, #11 Mag caps, and RWS Dynimint Noble 1075+ caps. For myself I will always choose to shoot a version of #11 cap, either the #11 Mag or the 1075+ caps. I really prefer the 1075+ but for range work and recreational shooting I do use the CCI #11 Mag cap. REASON - it is less expensive.

In am email to CCI, I asked about the ability of the cap the Magnum cap to ignite T7 powder versus the Musket cap. They in short said that the two caps burn at nearly the same temperature and can ignite T7 reliably.

I do prefer the #11 body to that of the musket cap - basically because if the cap is inserted on the nipple post correctly and the nipple post is made to the correct diameter the cap will stretch the convoluted side of the cap on the post and make the breech water proof.

This picture will show you the convolutions in the walls of the #11 cap body.

The dimensions of the nipple stack is really important in the fit of the cap.

In this group of pictures I am trying to show the benefits of the tight fitting cap on the nipple. If the fit is correct it will make the breech water proof. For myself, hunting in the rain and snow with an open breech area this is very important.

As noted by some if the cap fits correctly you will need to shoot it off the nipple post or peel it off with the edge of a knife blade (save the cap and re-use if in a recreational shoot or something). This water proofing effect is very important to me.

I will continue to shoot a tight fitting #11 cap body.

Hatchet Jack, I do have #11 breech plugs in both of my Whites!

Sounds like a deal to me Rodeo. The plug has only a dozen or so shots go thru it.I also have 3 cans of caps that I will have no use for. I will send them along with the plug . I will PM you my mailing info.

Good post Sabotloader. I also like a tight fitting no.11 cap to help make rain/water proof. I like to slip a cap protector over top to help seal the seam between the cap and plug when hunting in wet weather.

I use RWS #11 in all my Whites, shotguns and rifles, never have had a misfire. Find it's easier to remove primer with my Leatherman.

Same here except I haven't tried the Leatherman idea. If I don't get a shot I take an old key on my vehicle key ring an use the serrated edge to back the #11 cap out. I use RWS and Remington magnum #11 caps both work excellent!! Killed three deer this past season with them in the S91 .451.

Prefer musket cap for ease of use but never had any problems with #11s other then a pain in the posterior to handle.
Use edge of pocket knife to pop #11s off.

When using a scope it is almost impossible for me to cap the breech plug without using a capper. Can't seem to fit my fingers under scope. The no.11 capper is skinnier and much easier for me to use than the fatter, bulkier musket capper. I have a hard time getting the musket cap on even when using the musket capper. With that said the no. 11 is the way for me to go.

Toytruck glad to see you are still around, it's me Jerry from DWB's. Got one deer this season with my Whitetail .451.
I also use RWS and Remington #11 caps. I used to use my full size Leatherman and found my Juice S2 Leather works better for removing primers. My hunting buddy uses 209 primers and he is always using my Leatherman to put primers in.

I've been good, just slowing down a bit. Not hunting much once the weather gets under 30. Going all out to get a deer with my bow, which I haven't done in about six years. Got to use my recurve as I cannot pull back my compound after hunting my should two years ago.

Good hearing from you.

As for musket caps versus any version of the #11 caps, generally, it doesn't matter. However, that said, In MY OPINION, it doesn't make any difference with pellets and #11 might even be better for such, but I Prefer Musket caps overall. I don't know about scopes, I don't use them, but you still should have no problem in getting the musket cap on with an open breech... even if by hand...

I live in a very humid, on occasion, environment and there have been instances where #11 for some reason didn't ignite. These were mostly with Remington Caps, but they all fail at some point... but not generally musket caps... on that point, I concur with Doc... though the only thing I hunt that bites would be a pig, but I did get charged by a ram once... :D
