I have always shot a 25 yards and kept the POI 1/2" low and most all the time I was on at 100 yards then would make final adjustments I saw a video where the guy was telling how to sight a rifle in he said he shoots it 3" high at 50 yards and he is in the ball park at 100 maybe it's me but I kind of think he wouldn't even be on the paper

I try to sight in 1.5" high at 50yds, to be in the ballpark at 100 when shooting sabots. 3" sounds reasonable. I guess it depends what kind of load an bullet.

I’ve always sighted in 1/2” low at 25 yards also.

With all of my long guns I have to sight low at 25 to be near "on" at 100. My saboted loads are still sort of high at 100, but within hunting parameters. Its amazing how much climb these bullets have at 100 yards yet.

Several factors need to be considered and one sometimes forgotten is scope height. The higher you go the more it throws off the Line Of Sight vs actual bullet path. I also sight in a bit low at 25 yards just to get close for 50 and then 100. POI for many of my loads will be closer at 100 quite often because the bullet is still rising above LOS at 50.

The factor here is some guns will be on at 100 if sighted in at 25yds is ONLY operative if the bore axis/sight height coupled with the bullet trajectory will allow it. Different guns will respond differently. If you get on target at 25yd with a smoothbore and same with a rifled musket, dollars to doughnuts, they'll be drastically different by even 50yds.

Upshot- find what works for your gun/powder/bullet combo.

My Thunderhawk with a 300 grain XTP bullet and 90 grains Goex FFg would be an inch high @ 100 yards while dead on @ 25 with a low-mounted scope. Black Diamond was 100 grains 777 2" high @ 50 yards got me 2" high at 100 yards with a 270 grain Speer, also with a low-mounted scope.

Since moving to the smokeless more, I haven't even worried about where the bullet hits in relation to the crosshairs inside of 100 yards as it will not make that big of a difference unless I were shooting at a squirrel.

When I finally get around to trying conicals in my sidelock someday, I plan to rough sight at 25 and then stick a Shoot-N-See target on a refrigerator box when I move to 100 yards. But that's more commentary about my eyes & open iron sights than on exterior ballistics, I guess. Every other long gun I own is scoped now.

I know your original post was done in March, just wondering if you came to any conclusions. I assume you’re talking about ML and not CF.

When I bought my ML I began looking for “ballistic calculator” charts for ML. I always used them when I zeroed my CF rifles. They show exactly what you were asking. You choose your “zero” yardage and the table shows the POI at whatever increment

I know this post has been out ther for a while, did you ever find the answer you were looking for. Were you asking relative to muzzleloaders or centerfires?

yeah, MLs. And BH209 with sabot and 250grn bullet. Sorry i didn't specify. I meant, it depends on what you are shooting. BP, bh209, sabots, conicals, smokeless... if I'm shootin bh209 and sabots I'll sight in 1" - 1.5" hi at 50yds to be close-ish at 100 to dial in a scope and then tune the load. Your experience may vary. Now I have a White and I'll shoot 435grn conicals and maybe start with T7 2f. I will sight in at 25yds and see where i land on the 50yd target.
