Just now this morning, finished burning the last of the container of lot 29. What i called 90 grain, weighed 67.5 grain. Opened the new jug of lot 31; the same volume of this stuff weighs 61.4 grain. Kinda sorta interesting i guess.

I am still shooting lot 27 . I think I had close to 20 lbs of that lot . I know this is wrong compared to everyone else’s finding . I found if I weigh the powder lot to lot my velocity is very close . If I measure by volume ( lot to lot ) my velocity Varied by a significant margin .

The new powder should get closer to 84 /120 . Ron would you do me a favor and chronograph your new load . Normally for myself 5 grains by weight equals aprox 50 FPS . So in theory if you measure by volume your new load will be slower .

I am working off of lot 31 now. Just dropped 10 ea 90 grain charges (volume). I discarded the lightest and the heaviest charge and the balance averaged 63.7 by weight. Don't know if this is relevant considering the variation in volume measures.

Hey Doug,

Haven't clocked the load from lot 31 yet, but did shoot the loads this morning. Shot 250g XTP. Shot them from a rifle zeroed for 460g conical loads, so had to shoot at 25 yard, then 100 yard.

After hitting the bull at 100 yard; moved the target out to 200 yard. Turned the elevation dial up 7.5 moa, the same as i used to do using the lot 29 load. The bullets hit the bull.

It seems the bullets shot by 61.4g weight of lot 31, fly about the same as bullets shot by 67.4g weight of lot 29. Just one look is all, so far.

Like I've said a thousand times, "It's always the same VOLUME!"

You are correct Busta . Western even states powder should be measured by volume . I was just stating my findings and also my buddies finding with a LabRadar. I am not trying to dispute anything I was just curious ! Lol relax buddy !

I was addressing Ron, since he started the thread, and posted his results. Looks like his Volume equivalents got him the same results out to 200 yards, even though the charges were weighed and quite different from the two different lot numbers. You must have missed this from Ron, right before my post?

I'm always relaxed. It seems the guys that weigh it, are the ones that get uptight and defensive. I quit weighing it way back in 2008, because there was no practical difference at normal hunting ranges out to 200 yards. I could care less about long range hunting and target shooting. They have a forum for that about 5 doors down.

yes that is what they said with the lots after 29. seems people on here forget things. Don't know why Busta was so up tight about Rons findings. Say what you want but pound of feathers is pound of feathers volume has nothing to do with it.

Doug, went out this morning fully intending to clock this load of lot 31, but forgot the bullets at home. Only had the one 250g XTP loaded in the rifle to shoot, and it was shot before i discovered i had no more bullets. Fished around the truck, and found a 300g partition bullet, shot it; nearly hit the bottom support of the target; shot no more. Then i found a couple what i took to be Hornady monoflex ml bullets, and shot them.

The aim was the bottom target. The scope was set the same today as it was the last time i shot Blackhorn from lot 29. The three 250g bullets all hit the same area using lot 31, as when using lot 29. The powder charge was measured using a RCBS Uniflow powder measure, which measures volume. The charges are all what i call 90g. The charge from lot 31 weighs 61.4g or thereabouts. The charge from lot 29 weighs 67.5g or thereabouts. Seems like it is OK to post this information in this forum instead of forum 5 below, because the charges were measured by volume not weight, though they were weighed, and because the target was only 199.2 yard from the muzzle.
