Well I got to one of the shops that had a 16.5 inch At-one stock. I had a couple concerns when I went to look at it after viewing the Animation on Boyd's web site. One had to do with the forearm and the other those buttons for adjusting the cheek piece and LOP. They actually did not have one out on the shelf so went and got a NIB out for me to look at.
I knew right away I was not buying this one, hated the look of that short barrel. To me it don't look right in the stock, but I know it was designed for a suppressor, that extra length would look ok. I actually liked the forend. It was nice and wide and not too rounded. It did not have any flat on the bottom but was just nicely rounded, it looked like it would work great with bi-pod or on regular sand bags. The next concern was the buttons that latch the adjustable cheek piece and LOP. Those buttons were much harder to press in to allow adjustment than I expected, Very nice! There was a hidden surprise that was not at all expected and did not work for me. This was the bottom of the butt stock. It was flat on the bottom from pistol grip to the toe of the Butt pad and that is good, But the part I did not like was how wide that flat was. It had to be between 1/2" and 5/8" at least! I don't recall ever seeing this wide of a flat on a butt stock before. That's too wide to fit my Bald Eagle or Protector rear bags, and the Protector has a flat that is 3 stitches wide. I know some might not know what that is all about but we used these bags when I was shooting benchrest and this stock was double the width of those stocks. The MTR is flat too but about half the width of this Boyd's stock, and the MTR should fit my bags nicely. Now If I were looking for a "Varmint" style stock this would be a top choice. It really is a cool stock, but for what I want/need to use in small bore type matches, it is not fitting for me.
This shop did have an old Winchester 52D that was beautiful, but it is not grooved or drilled and tapped. Its old enough that it just has the blocks on the barrel for mounting a long scope (or the Peep and Globe sites) like the Unertl or Lyman Target spot. They also had an old model 64 Savage/Anschutz that was real nice. These were on consignment and I think they wanted a bit too much for either one, so I passed.
On a side note they told me that the 24" version of the At-One is not actually released yet even though there are some on GunBroker. They said it is delayed or they would have had them in stock.
