Very interesting . I choose my bullet by where im gonna hunt at and the conditions i'll be met with . Most of the time in my 50 i use a barnes 275 xpb 460 s&w when i may not know where ill set up or the angles presented . I also use the parker be 275 , usually longer shots over 250+yds for farm fields fence row to fence row . Thick river bottoms and brush the 400gr barnes original is gonna be tried out this year just because . All are driven with max loads of blackhorn 140 to 120 grV . This is in a Knight with a Remington uml barrel , 1in 26 twist . And yes i keep a chart with my scope settings .

ive been using the .444gr powerbelt with only 70gr of Blackhorn 209. A slow moving soft bullet that mushrooms perfectly at the slower velocities and exits! I gave up trying to make my muzzle loader into a high powered rifle, it works for me.

Of course they do and have existed for ages. Its called a lead conical and you can buy them for less than $50/100 at Bullshop Bullets. :) You can buy them at NoExcuses from around $28/50 and many other vendors also. Bullshop just happens to offer a 440gr 50cal conical too. :lewis:

In affect you ARE making it into a high powered rifle. You are basically shooting a 45-70 to 45-90 that loads through the muzzle. ;)

Fury Stars in every gun except 308 smokeless. Berger’s in that one

I made a rookie mistake and bought a "lifetime supply" (over 900) of 250 gr. SST "blems" on sale shortly after I got my first ML rifle put together. Got about 1,200 black Crush Ribs in a LGS going-out-of-business liquidation sale. Fortunately, that combo groups well for me over 110 grains of BH209 (I weigh 77 grains but those arguments are already fleshed out in other threads), of which I still have about 9 pounds from that same liquidation sale. I keep deer shots close based on recommendations here related to jacket thickness and resulting velocity requirement for reliable expansion with that bullet.

My club range limits me to 25/50/100/200 yard paper target berms. I don't hunt in Iowa every year and when I do it's just with one October Early ML season tag, so I can't justify buying more bullets for that rifle while I'm still sitting on such a stockpile of SSTs. Thus, the experimenter in me must live vicariously through the accounts shared on this site by others with much broader experience. I've read others' experiences with probably 3-4 times as many bullets here than were known to me to even exist at the time I bought those SSTs, which was shortly before I joined this site about 11 years ago. When I finally do run out of SSTs, and/or decide to play around with other bullets, ModernMuzzleloader.com will be my most valued resource! It's been a really great (and cheap) source of education so far and seems to get better as time goes by.

I should have been more clear, I'm not one to chase high velocities trying to mimic a modern center fire rifle.

Well... my plan with my newly acquired .50 T/C ProHunter is to use the 370gr Maxiball. I love to hunt large game (moose, elk and black bear) in the dense northern boreal forest of our major river valleys, and like how hard they hit. If, however, they do not group acceptable at 100yds, then I will move to 240gr XTP in .429, which I got with the barrel.

300gr XTP and 300gr XTP MAG on the left. I think far right is the Sierra 458 300gr FNHP which is a great bullet for ML speeds.

The one with the stubby red tip is the now discontinued T/C PTX. I bought a large quantity of these in 300 grain and they shoot very well out of my Knight Disc Elite with 105 grains 777 FFF and a MMP sabot. Performance has been on par with what folks say on this forum.
