I started a thread on the "Bullet Casting" forum about bullet molds and lube grooves. . .well, that sorta got de-railed into a discussion on barrel work and folks who do rifling/rebore work. I have a T/C Hawken barrel in .45 cal with a 1:48 twist that I'm wanting to look into making a 1:28/1:30 fast twist barrel while still staying in the .45 cal diameter bullet range. I sent a letter to Mr. Bobby Hoyt and an email to Romano Rifle Co. today in regards to what I want to achieve. . .is there any other respectable barrel smiths that anyone cares to recommend?

If this doesn't seem like it will be a feasible solution to my barrel quest, then I'm going to just go with one of the custom barrel manufacturers and call it good! I'm beginning to see the sidelock muzzleloader "rabbit hole" opening up wider and deeper all the time - LOL !!!

Hoyt is the No. 1 Name you hear when it comes to Re-Bores :lewis: As for Liners, I know he does them as Well. He would be the First guy I would Talk to.

I had Hoyt Re-Bore a Barrel last Winter. It was a Rough pitted 13/16” .36 Cal TC Seneca Barrel, i had him take it out to .40 Cal and Twist it 1:37, I sent him the Barrel, He did the Job and sent it back to me with the Bill for his Work (120-125 Bucks) Plus whatever It costed him to Ship it Back to me. I’m not Sure on Re-lining a Barrel? Will be interesting to Find out what you hear?

Sorry about that de--railment . I was a part of that .
I know my bk92 54+ barrel is gonna get rebored to a 58 with a fast twist , maybe 1in28 or so . Suggestions ?? That rifle was a gift from my folks and NO WAY will i ever part with it . I got a take--off REM. UML tube on it now but its just not MY BAZOOKA anymore without that bigger bore . Sentimental fool i guess....... A 58 with a fast twist would be for "Intimate" encounters along river bottoms or really thick spots i hunt at times . Tracking there is a nightmare !!!
Almost original again too !!!
Thanks for starting this thread by the way , its a much needed good one to follow !!!! I know i am talking about an inline but i needed tbis info desperately .

Sounds like you and Doc White too !!! He talks quite extensively on his site , one of the titles , about hot--rod sidelocks and how to build one yourself . Hope that helps . Its pretty detailed .

Would go with Bobby Hoyt does awesome work, Ed Rayls is another good one but hes usually booked about 6 months or longer out.

I really wanted to go with Rayl on a Barrel Build a few years back, But he was WAY to far out for me. That usually means Good though, if a guy is that Busy :lewis:

Something to keep in mind, Depending on Shipping? For me it was about a 65-70 Dollar Round Trip to Hoyt in Shipping Alone, then Ad in his 120-125 Dollar Job (Which is an AWESOME deal :lewis:) You end up right at 200 Bucks for a Re-bore Back in your Hand.

This is why it puzzles me when Someone sends an Old Barrel to Hoyt that Has Extra Scope Base holes drilled in it, Rusty Corroded Breech plug Threads, Etc. Basically a Piece of Junk, Yard ornament. If you are gonna do a Re-Bore Why not Find a Really Nice Barrel Exterior Wise to Send? TC Made a MILLION and 10 of these Things, it’s not like they are Scarce, Hard to Find.

200 Bucks is Stil cheap compared to 400 for a New Rice “Drop in” Barrel that You stil have to Blue. The Old Green Mountain LRH “Drop in” Barrels were undoubtedly the Best Value, BUT they are nearly Extinct Now. And as to be expected, They keep getting HARDER AND HARDER to Find, and when you do they Bring a Fair Mint, the last few New ones i have Seen went for 300-350 Bucks.

And Lastly, I have heard that Hoyt will Build a Brand new Barrel to your Specs, I don’t know this for Fact as i have not Spoken with him about it, But i have heard, or Read that? I would ask him about that as Well?

Back around 2010 I had Norman Johnson of High Plains Re-boring and Barrels (Turtle Lake, ND) rebore a .50 cal stainless Rem 700 ML to .54 caliber. I spec'ed a 1-26" .540"x .548" and it came in right on the money. He did have the barrel a full year though. Generally the larger the bore the slower the twist. Something like 1-38" would be considered pretty fast for a .58 caliber. I have a 1-48" twist T/C Big Boar .58 barrel that shoots bullets much better than than the more common 1-48" twist .50 & .54 T/C's. Personally I think 1-48" is more of a faster round ball twist in the .54 and below calibers.

Thank you for your advice !!! I dont really know too much about the 58 other than its BIG LEAD and highly regarded for its effects (grizzlys) !!! The 54 barrel got ruined when i loaned it to my best friend . I forgot and he didnt know about the corrosivness of the powders we use . I would think that a rebore would be better than a sleeve for my application . Probably less $$ too. It was 1 in 27 measured , not the claimed 1 in 28 on the barrel stamp not that it matters now . It would SHOOT !!!! How is a 58 for accuracy ?? Is the runaway freight train legend true ?? Conicals of course ....gr ??

My letter went out yesterday to Bobboy Hoyt, not sure how long till I get a reply, but I will keep you all informed of what he recommends. And as of this post I haven't had a email reply from Romano Rifle Co., but that email went out yesterday as well.

WOW, Sideshow. . ..58 cal!!! Thats surely going to be painfull on both ends of that boom-stick!!! You should have a nasty blood trail to follow with that one. Not sure if it will obturate any, momentum alone is going to make that bullet pass right through just about anything Michigan has to offer. . .unless you've come across Bigfoot in the UP ?!?!?!?

Yea thats the plan and break through everything in its path , regardless of angle complete penetration , DRT preformance . It helps to LIKE recoil too . River bottom huntin can demand alot. BUT i see some BIG deer !!! BIG LEAD is THE answer for those conditions !!! Its not for everybody !!! I use to use a 10 ga slug gun , 766gr @ 1600 . Cant buy the slugs anymore .

The 10 ga is what the Canadian O.O.P. used when polar bears came into the town of Churchill on the artic circle . Didnt pay to make a rukus there !!! It worked better than their 375 h&h's did as a stopper . Ithaca mag 10's with a slug barrel . Please forgive me for drifting off....again......

Almost forgot !!! These fellas doing this reboreing , is it common that they put a "choke" in the muzzle ??? I HATE that !!! Whats wrong with a parallel bore ???

I recieved a reply from Larry Romano today when I got home from work. . .here it is!

"" lance, can't recut the existing barrel, I would have to drill out the barrel and install a liner with the twist that you want, price would be $450.00 plus S&H
