Picked up a new "Tool" Today

I have been looking for one of these for a couple years. I it is an DISC Original 50. But more importantly it is what I call a big bore 50. I have titled it a DISC Carbine. It only has a 22" barrel and will work perfect for me during Idaho's late ML season since we hunt in the timber that time of the year.

I made several changes to the carbine. First the ODISC stock had to go so I put a DISC Extreme thumbhole on it. It also came ready to shoot Orange plastic jackets, pulled that out and installed a Knight Western breech plug and a Lehigh #11 nipple. Installed a western style Lehigh/Knight bolt and a newer non C tool hammer assembly. The trigger is an original 3 screw Timney,

Then I put a Williams FP Peep sight on:

And the last thing was to install was a Williams #1690 Streamlined ramp with a 0.343 Williams Fire Sight and Williams Fire Sight Hood. And for me the green fiber optic is much more visible so I swapped the red one out for a green .060 rod.

Now to be able to get to the farm and get it sighted in... The snow is the big hinderance there...

I've always liked the idea of a 22 to 24 inch barrell on a muzzleloader. How much do you give up in terms of performance with a shorter barrel?

You know - I think we both know that you would/could loose some velocity but I really do not think that I really would notice the difference at 200 yds. Thing is the more I handle it the more I really like it... When you throw it up to the shoulder - target acquisition is really QUICK! Or maybe that is just me...

I personally like a short barrel, especially for what you’re doing with it , I am really wanting to cut a 52 down and put it in an ultra lite stock for a woods gun

Shoot that would certainly make a great woods gun. And the 1-26 twist could be to your real advantage.

Bullet on bore--- non sabot , non conical bullet . Like the 50 cal fury star tip sized to fit . Seemed like your best bet for a bullet to me .

Bullet on bore--- non sabot , non conical bullet . Like the 50 cal fury star tip sized to fit . Seemed like your best bet for a bullet to me .

O now I got it.... Actually it will be using a variety of bullets from. During ML season here I do have to use open sights and a full bore lead bullet so I will be shooting a Bull Shop 504x460 both for elk and deer - that is a little much for deer but... Also Dan makes a 400 grain LGP which really works well also - I will probably switch to that during ML season. A friend of mine used them this year harvested a really nice bull on a controlled hunt. 200 yard shot.

Then during regular rifle season I will switch to a Lehigh Controlled Fracture copper bullet probably a 452x265 grain solid copper jewel.

These bullets do everything I need and more - they are awesome.

This ballistic sheet shows the bullet being shot with 120 grain of BH - in this rifle I will be using 120 grains of T7 so I will loose a little bit of velocity - not enough to worry about.

Even at 225 yards still have plenty of energy...

I do have a bullet that Lehigh built several years ago that I can also use. It is a 50x270 CF Sabotless.

These shoot really well also. I have used them from a older Knight Wolverine and a White - White Lightening
