Traditions .50 Cal Conicals. Like i need anymore Bullets :p I Couldn’t resist, these things were in a Clearance Cart for 1 Dollar.

I figure i can melt em down and Pour a few Quality Bullets for that :lewis: Then i got to thinking? Look at how PATHETIC these are Packaged, There was ZERO Care put in to Protecting these Bullets, They Just let them BANG Around against eachother. I decided to make this a Project. These things are BEAT to Death! At least Hornady was Smart Enough to Want/Use better Packaging, Protecting each bullet, Good Job Hornady :lewis:

Look at these things, WHAT A JOKE!! Knowing The Base is what Steers the Bullet, It’s hard to get Excited about JUNK like this, This is another AWESOME Example of why i Cast my Own Bullets, I don’t have to Settle for Garbage like this

These look to be nothing more than the Hornady Great Plains Bullets Re-Branded/Named. Same 385 Grain Weight, Hollow Base, And Hollow Point. Maybe a Little Shallower Hollow Point?

Anyway, on with the “Project” Here is after Bullet Base Surgery, They actually came out Pretty Good :lewis:

I decided to Shoot 5 as their intended Design (Grease Groove) and the other 5 Modified to Paper Patched

Lewis are the Hornady buletts any good in a 1 48 twist?

I have not tried the Hornady Great Plains themselves in a 1:48 Twist? But i have Shot VERY similar Bullets (Lyman Plains) in 1:48 Twist and they Shot very well :lewis: I wouldn’t Hesitate to try them! They have a Hollow Point, some are for it, some against it. I don’t see a Soft Lead Hollow Point Being ANY kind of a Problem at Typical Muzzleloader Velocities of 1300-1500 FPS, They are gonna Roll back into a Mushroom Ball. I wouldn’t hesitate to Hunt ANYTHING with them.

Shhot those Traditions bullets and see how they shoot. I dont think they will do too good.

They just might shoot good. I see a lot of bent bullet tips and I just straighten them a bit and seem to shoot fairly decent.

My .54 TC Renegade with the factory 1:48 stock barrel likes the Hornady GPB's pretty well. The very first time I tried them I went with 100 grains of 2f and got an 1-1/2" out of them at 100 yards. I didn't even try any other loads, I wanted them for an elk hunting load. Some say they expand a bit too much for elk. I've only shot a deer with one so far, as I've gone to patched RB for everything, but on the deer at 55 yards it left a bore size entry hole and about double that size exit. I can honestly say I don't think I've ever read or heard someone say their 1:48 wouldn't shoot one well.
I believe they only make them in .50 cal now. If you don't have a .50, then I'd go with Idaholewis's recommendation of the Lyman Plains bullet.
