I did it to my GM barrel because i wanted to smooth out some machining marks, and slightly rough edges, that I saw when i bore scoped it. It felt fine and looked great but I just wanted to smooth out a couple things. It doesn't even really take anything off the barrel. I've steel wooled a couple barrels before. It's not not even as abrasive as bore polish imho. I'm not saying everyone should do it but I felt that in this case the barrel could benefit from a few swipes of the steel wool. I cleaned it after and it looked a little bit better to me. It could use a bit more polishing but I'm gonna do it the old fashioned way from here. Shooting it.
I got a bore fire lapping kit. One of those where you roll a lead bullet in the abrasive compounds (3 dif grit levels) I felt like that is overkill for most modern barrels. I'm not using it on this GM barrel. But I won't rule out using it if I got a cheap gun or one that had a really rough bore or maybe a last ditch fix for some accuracy problems. It's a case by case and judgment call thing. I don't feel like I did this barrel any harm with the steel wool.
Anyway, after my Davis Deerslayer trigger comes in and I put it together, I can go shoot it and see how it does.
Im glad to hear that rifle is close to Ready !!! You gotta be excited !!!

That's just like thinkin ya need to fixin somethin when ya ain't sure if it's broken. Like thinkin ya need to wipe b4 ya poop to me. Kind regards
That saying always cracks me up. What man (boy) doesn't think poop is funny tho.
Sometimes tho, if you have experience with a thing, you know what can be improved on right outta the box. Not saying I'm an expert but I feel like I've seen enough barrels to have an idea about whether or not the bore could use a touch-up.

LMAO right on. Great post. Another perspective never hurts. I have always prided myself for being an or thee out of the box thinker in the class. But I did not consider the perspective you brought to light. Good on ya brotha. Oh, and thank you too. Kind regards

Bob, I don’t personally know Lee? Nor have i ever Claimed to. I have purchased his Sights and other odds n ends from him over the Phone, instead of going through a Vendor. I have had a Handful of Phone Conversations with Him, I asked him Questions? Lee took the Time to share Several Tips with me, I Followed them, I took them to the Field and Tested them for myself, The things he Shared with me Work, and Work Very Well. Lee Shaver was very good to me, and I have nothing but good to Say about The Man.

Fact is, You would know Lee Shaver much better than i do, You have met him in person, Shot with him etc. I don’t Know him on that level? I am Curious to See how Dave Gullo reacts here? I will see him in the Morning. I do know Dave Gullo Personally, i see him on a Regular Basis in his Business (Buffalo Arms) Dave and Lee are Both HIGHLY accomplished Shooters, Each with World Championships under their Belts, more than 1 time
Sounds like the same impression I got after several conversations ,and Dave also as far as helping me with LR muzzleloading , You won"t go wrong with their experience /just sayin/Ed

I think you have it backwards.. No need to do anything to a new barrel from a good maker until proven it will not shoot.

I think it’s safe to say that you could ask 10 “World Class” Shooters their opinions on Barrel Break in and you would get 10 Completely Different answers. This is Sorta the Same thing as the Over Powder Wad to protect the Bullet base deal :D Not everyone is gonna agree on everything
Even more reason not to arbitrarily post something unless you’ve proved it yourself.

I understand what you are saying and agree with you. But in this case I felt that I was not going to do anything to this barrel that could, possibly, have a negative affect on it. Only range time will tell. I will let you know how it turns out when I can shoot it.

I wish Lew would have his own ML Forum! I'm sure it would be just as popular as MM. He has a wealth of Knowledge and Experience who is willing to share without asking for nothing in return! I personally learned a lot from Lew! If it wasn't for Lew, I might have sold my Renegade that I got to love as much as my White's and that's saying something!

Thanks, Lew you are surely going to be missed! Here's hoping things settle down and you come back.

I have known and shot with Lee & Dave for many years. Dave & I were in the same shooting squad for a week of International LR shooting, my only International Match, actually where I received my Avatar for a top 3 finish. We all still correspond. I’ll see Lee again in a few weeks at my Creedmoor 150 match. Were 10-12 past & present World and National Champions will shoot - myself included.

I have shot some great groups out of new guns, that’s why I don’t understand why someone would mess with one until proven the need.

Green Mountain - my custom in-line that one the 1st 2 NMLRA IH-AGG National Championships shot by Jason Day & Bob Wetzler.

IDLewis has some good stuff and information as do others on this site.
Youtube is full of misinformation and unfortunately there is no avenue for discussion..

Nice shooting 52. Sometimes youtube is nice cuz you don't need to discuss. you just watch and see what others do or don't. Let it soak in and decide for yourself if it's worth remembering. or just move on and let it go. We all gotta decide for ourselves.

Everybody can do the same thing on MM as they do on YouTube. Decide for yourself if it’s worth it to try or just move on without offending anyone.

I was thinking that youtube is almost like being with the person, watching, listening, but not able to communicate and they don't know you're there. It's very cool that way. But this forum is more about SHARING ideas and info, discussing different ways to do things. Being a part of the process instead of just watching it.

Have any of you fellas heard of hand lapping a new barrel? I do it on all of my new barrels. Sure saves you a lot of time and trouble down the road.

Absolutely correct Lee is . Snipers in Vietnam , my friend being ranked #2, all did this or used white scotch brite ultra fine from breech to muzzle wraped around a bore brush letting it rotate following the twist . The difference is dramatic even on a used bore . Damn good advice !!! All my rifled guns get this treatment !!! New or used !!! Groups tighten significantly , velocity increases , and barrels stay cleaner much longer . Ive never had to do it more than 1 time either .
All Nam snipers did not do that. I know one, that did nothing to his rifle but shoot it.

I use the Same method but a little different I use the blue scotch Brite and 000 steel wool with JB and have had great results.

I've been hesitant to use any scotch brite in a barrel. it seems much more abrasive than the steel wool.
Its good for tight spots or burrs WITH USER SELF CONTROL !!! Steel wool is MUCH gentler . It basicaly GENTLELY smooths things out . Scotch brite WILL remove material ,especially anything coarser than the WHITE . Be Carefull with scotch brite !!! It CAN work in a Hurry to Your Suprise And Woe !!!
