On a side note. Tabasco had a free shipping deal going on. SHIP4DAD was the code.

I got 3 bottles of Tabasco Family Reserve, 1 Bottle of Tabasco Scorpion and 1 bottle of Tabasco Rocoto. The Family Reserve is just stellar if you like Tabasco. Aged 8 years vs 2 and they use white wine vinegar. The Scorpion sauce is way hotter that i expected but not brutal. The Rocoto sauce is a bit milder than regular Tabasco and flat out delicious. I smothered soft tacos with it the other night.

This is a MUST try if you like hot a sauce but dont want your face to melt.

I have never seen or tried a Rocoto pepper but have wanted to since you started this thread and mentioned them. After seeing this post I took a trip though the Tabasco store. I personally don't really care for the regular Tabasco but love the Chipotle Smoked pepper sauce. It is great in a bowl of beans, stew, Chili, etc.. On the Tabasco site you can get the Chipotle in larger bottles so got 2 of the 12oz (way cheaper than I can get the same amount in via small bottles at the local grocerys (When I can get it), and I added a 2 bottles of Rocoto, and 2 Family Reserve. I also got a jar of spicy pepper jelly, so my shipping was free. I got the order last night.
That Rocoto is FANTASTIC!:drool: Dabbed some roast chicken in it and could not stuff it in my face fast enough. There is plenty of heat but the Flavor was fantastic. Now I fear that 2 bottles of it will not be enough. Gonna have to order some more. The family reserve is definitely better than the regular too, and the Jelly was not at all bad but will have to try some more of that to be sure.;) Now got to make some tacos this weekend!:cool:

Yeah that rocoto sauce is excellent. Nothing like regular Tabasco really. I have 3 rocotos growing this year. I would say the heat from the ones last year was similar to the Tabasco. They can be unbelievably sweet too.

Are you using the woven plastic fabric pots with the handles that were originally brought out to grow potatoes in for your peppers?
 
I got Winners Outfitters brand off Amazon IIRC. They were about $15 per 6pack in 7gal size. ATM they are sold out or cost way more. A cheap way around this are the blue resusable Walmart shopping bags. They are like 50cent each and work just fine for a season or maybe 2. Get the cheap Walmart kiddie pool for about $12 and you got a nice little 5-6 plant unit. Cut a drain hole 2" up the side in the pool and bottom water as needed.

I really like the kiddie pool/shopping bag idea for bottom watering the pepper plants. Same would hold true for tomato, eggplant, and potato plants. Depending upon the size of the bags used.

What kind of mulch are you using there?

How long do the pools last?

I am guessing that the roots air prune themselves due to the porous sides of the shopping bags? So you don't have to worry about the roots circling around the insides of the bags, like you would with a solid pot?

I use either HydroFarm saucers or Dollar Tree white wash tubs for a buck. Them large green saucers cost more than my bags did.

The white wash tubs at Dollar Tree fit the wally bags "ok". So for $1.50 you got the pot covered. The media you put in them will cost far more unless you have a good bulk vendor. I can get a cubic yard for under $50 if i want to go pick it up. Price jumps a lot delivered.

My favorite media for pots is Pro-Mix BRK with aged pine bark fines. I get something similar locally and its killer for fabric pots. It just requires constant watering in peak summer heat. NEVER put dirt in fabric pots. You will end up with a compacted brick. Use peat or coco coir based growing media.

Never had any diseases that im aware of. When media or pots are worn out its dumped in ground plots or compost piles. Worn out pots get tossed but good fabric pots are good for 2-3 seasons easily. If you dump the media each year and hang them up you will get even more out of them. Im on my 3rd season with mine and they are about shot because i just covered them and didnt dump last season.
 
I need to get a good layer of fresh grass clippings on my compost pile soon. That pile is about 5ftx5ft and nearly 4ft tall before it started breaking down.

The last time I had pine bark/leaf compost delivered was the early '90's, and I was paying about $55.00/yard for it. For containers I would mix that compost 50/50 with Pro-Mix that I bought in the big bales. Sometimes I would add perlite, or vermiculite that I also bought in the big 4 cu. ft.bags if I thought I needed more drainage.

I really like the simplicity of the kiddie pool/open mesh shopping bag system for bottom watering.
 
Our local growers mix is
40% aged pine bark fines
40% Black Gold compost
20% rice hulls

I mix that 50/50 with ProMix All Purpose. Its cheap at Menards. A 2.2cuft bale is about $12 on sale. $14 normally. You can use it straight but be prepared to water daily. Its the mix they sell to nurseries.

ProMix HP and BRK both drain like mad but they are also WAY more expensive.

You are fortunate to have a local source for growing medium that nice. That stuff is KILLER!!!!!

Most gardeners just don't realize what the benefits are to top notch soil. I had a 23" deep × 9' wide × 27' long raised bed that I built accordingly to the Square Foot Garden model. I used two tiers of 2"×8" boards, separated by a single tier of 2"×10" boards. Every 4' a 2"×6" board was lag bolted vertically, between the 1st & 2nd tiers, crosswise, to prevent the long sides from bowing outwards. At the top, to establish the Square Foot pattern, 2"×4" boards were lag bolted vertically, crosswise, also to prevent bowing. Down the full 27' length of the bed, three 2"×4" boards were deck screwed, with gaps, to the end boards, and the cross boards to create a walkway to stand on so as to be able to easily reach the interior plants.

In essence, the entire bed was one giant raised bed. Roots went every which way. My original goal had been to double dig the entire bed. That was quickly put to rest when I encountered a nearly impenetrable layer of blue/gray/yellow clay that I could not sink the tip of a pick a single inch into.

So, instead of going down in the traditional manner, I went up. This was just before I was to start culinary school in December. My boss at a temp job at a local big time nursery one day told me to take the beater p/u truck and clean up the grounds of all the broken bags of mulch, fertilizer, compost, peat moss, potting mix, Pro-Mix, etc, and to dump it out at the farm. When I told him I was building a big raised bed garden, and asked how much he wanted for all of it, the grumpy old @$%^ gave me 2 hours, and the truck to haul about 1.5 tons to my mom's row house back yard. For free!!@

I purchased about 40 bales of peat moss, 5 large bags of vermiculite, 10 large bags of perlite, and 2 cubic yards of compost. This was in September.

My mother's best friend's back yard yielded 140, 30-gallon trash bags of leaves.

I shredded as many of the leaves as possible, about half. The balance were dug loosely into the top of the rest of the garden, which at that time had only a single 2"×8" tier.

I let the rain and snow have their way to break down the leaves not shredded. By late spring when it was safe to work the bed, I went at it with a 4-tine garden fork, mixing everything as thoroughly as possible. Several weeks later, after I realized I needed more height, and added the other 2 tiers, the cross braces, and the walkway, planting started. I used bright orange plastic twine, and staples to mark out the 1ft ×1ft squares. Masonite 1ft square templates with 7/8" holes drilled for poking a finger through the hole to mark planting spots were fabricated for 4, 6, 9, 12, 16 plants per square foot.

That first year we planted 4 eggplants because the labels said the yield would only be 3-5 eggplants per plant. We ate eggplant ALL SUMMER LONG, because each plant yielded in excess of 30 eggplants, and none of the neighbors ate eggplant. Same thing with green bell peppers. We fixed, and froze them all summer long. Didn't run out until April the next year. Bought cabbage cauliflower, and made chow-chow relish which was water bath canned.

Grew so many green beans that we were running out of freezer space. So I purchased a 21.5 quart All-American pressure canner, and we put up about 24 pints of green beans, in addition to about 10lbs frozen.

I love raised beds, and their productivity.

Aji amarillo are already larger than similar varieties ive planted in the same location. They do get larger though than many baccatum peppers.

I had a Funny one, well kinda not :) I noticed a Crow in my Pots, it wasn’t long and the Stupid thing was FLOPPING around in the Pot Acting Crazy? I figured out this Morning what it was, The D@mn things Pulled EVERY Single Marker out of my Pots, I mean EVERY SINGLE ONE of them! Scattered all over the Ground.

The only Good part about the Whole deal is all i Have going is Jalapeños, and Sugar Rush Peach, Everything will be easy to identify when they Start Ripening, Yellow, Orange, and Red Jalapeños, And the Sugar Rush Peach is a TOTALLY Different Critter all together.

I have a Break Barrel Pellet Rifle that i would Love to unleash on these Crows, But the D@mn things are a Protected Bird here??? We have LOTS of em, They need thinning Down :)

Crows, or ravens. I've never heard of crows being protected, but ravens yes.
