Hello everyone, its been a while since I've posted. Around Thanksgiving I sent my .45 cal. T/C Hawken in to Mr. Hoyt for some barrel work and I got it back in early February. . .I went with a 1-26 twt. for some 300 grain conical bullets. I'm just now getting around to shooting it (I know. . .sinful!) and I'm looking for a rear peep. The Lyman 57 and Williams FP just seem bulky and like they would catch every vine and low bush in the woods and I'm leaning away from them only for that reason. I was looking at the Skinner Renegade and like the simplicity of it (I'm solely a hunter) and wondered if anyone has ever mounted one on the back of a barrel just in front of the breach plug? I've seen enough barrels drilled and tapped this far back for scope mounts, so I feel this to be not much different. I also realize this sight is made for the Renegade barrel which has wider flats than my Hawken, but I could live with that if I could mount the Skinner all the way back. To those in the know, what do you think. . .go for it or hold off??? Thank you.

I put one of these Skinners on my Dad’s Renegade fairly recently, He absolutely loves the Sight :lewis: His Renegade had been setup with one of my Lyman 57s and He DESPISED it! I bought him the Skinner, and took the Lyman 57 Back :)

I can’t speak from Hands on experience mounting the Skinner Way back like you Speak, As i used the existing Rear sight holes as it was intended. But i am confident It would work just fine like that, in Fact i have no doubt that I would like it Better that way.

I can weigh in on the barrel mounted Skinner peep. Mine is mounted on a custom Ruger No1. My rifle has a tapered octagon barrel. I had the gun smith mount a Skinner peep ( I think it's called the "810" or "860") just forward of the action. I have the large aperture on mine and I can see through it very clearly. I had to play with the front sight height, but now it's correct and dead nutz at 100 yards. I also had the same model Skinner mounted on a White Bison model and it's a simple rugged sight. Set it and forget it. My 2 cents, you'll like it mounted the way you are considering.

Gentlemen, I appreciate your replies. This is something that I have been wanting to do, I just have two other "little birdies" trying to steer me away from "destroying" a custom barrel and the safety concern of drilling/tapping over the powder chamber. I've argued this with them quite a bit and have shown them countless Weaver base scope mounted sidelock muzzleloaders! Neither one is a hunter or avid shooter, but they both like firearms and like to tinker with them. . .one is an engineer and the other a machinist, so I do respect their opinions as friends and professionals. I'm going to go ahead with this project. Thanks again for the comments.

If it helps push you over the edge, my Custom Ruger is chambered in 50-70 Gov't. The sight is mounted just forward of the chamber. The holes for the Skinner will not be very deep. They mount Malcomb scopes on BPCR all the time. The rear mount is usually quite close to the chamber end of the barrel.

I don't so much worry about brush w the Williams or Lyman since the hammer of the gun is sticking up much more than the sight would be.

My main concern will be which is faster to use and is better at low light, the tang mounted sight or forward barrel mounted sight?

Also wonder which is more accurate. I know at 100 yards or less bughole groups aren't needed for hunting but I also like a shot to go where I want it to go, not just close to where I wanted it to go.

All legitimate questions as I am in the peep sight market right now.

What I would do is get a green fiber optic front sight. You may have to replace the red fiber optic as I don’t know any companies that sell a front sight with a green fiber optic.
Then purchase either the Lyman or Williams aperture sight. What I do is remove the rear aperture so it becomes a Ghost sight while hunting. For target shooting screw the rear aperture back in. This does not change your point of impact.

That is an easy fix and I have done many of them for archery and firearm sights. Just remove the current fiber optic and order the color of choice and diameter required to fill. Then push the new FO in the channel leaving about a 1/32" on either end. With an alcohol burner (no black soot from petroleum base fuel) heat until ends slightly mushroom, now it is locked in place and your set.

Any of you have a front sight height recommendation as a base for me to start with? Thanks in advance.
