As I'm putting together a new build, I found myself wondering why these optics are so scarce. IMO, it's the perfect mag range for blackpowder hunting, long range stuff aside. Leupold seems to have discontinued their 2.5-8 VX3i. Burris Fullfield 2-7 is a goner. Vortex Diamondback and Viper models are both discontinued. Considering how quickly they always get snapped up in the classifieds, there must be a decent market for them. So why do they seem to be going by the manufacturing wayside?

Optics Planet lists all kinds of 2-7x rifle scopes.

I disagree on their suitability for MLs. As the realistic range of MLs gets longer, i think the 2-7x is more suited to shotguns. But saying that i have an excellent 4x on one of my guns.

They do, but a lot of them are Barska, NCStar et al- not exactly optics I'd trust on the hunt of a lifetime. The only ones on there I'd really be interested in using are either the Redfield (which I actually just found out is now owned by Leupold) or the Minox. Slim pickings compared to other mag ranges.

Agreed that the equipment is becoming much more capable and pushing the bell curve to include longer max ranges. However, I'd bet that the vast majority of blackpowder hunters are still in the 200-yards-and-in boat. I also wouldn't feel underpowered at any realistic hunting range for a blackpowder rifle with a 7x optic, to be honest. But, that could just be my conservative take on shot distances.

OXN- I 100% agree! 2-7 is perfect for a ML. I love having the 2 power on the low end and 7 on the high end is plenty for any hunting distances. One of my favorite scopes in the family is a Vortex Diamondback 2-7. That scope was on my Omega and is now on my daughters Littlehorn. It even spent time on an AR. It’s accounted for 2 of the biggest bucks we have ever shot. My boy will be getting his first ML in February and I’d love to find that same scope used somewhere.

I have 2x7 Leupolds on 3 sidelocks , like them that much for hunting at my shooting yardage ( an counting points) and above all bullet placement . My eyes have not gotten better with age but the freezers stay full/Ed

2-7 is my preference as well. I have a Redfield on my most used muzzleloader. I like smaller diameter objectives on both my muzzleloaders and lever actions.

I've used the Leupold 2x7 Compact scopes on light rifles (including centerfires) for years. The one time I felt underscoped was a 400 yard shot that I ended up not taking. I've never understood why someone wants to carry a big heavy scope in the woods all day. With my ML, I would hold the duplex post on the top of an elk's back at 220 yards. Worked every time.

I have a Leupold 2x7 Vari-X 2 for more than 20 years now. Great scope for anything under 300 yds.

They still have the Revolution 2x7 and VX-Freedom 2x7 at OpticsPlanet. Both are close to $200 and plex. I beat a couple of them Redfields to death and they are still going. Finally replaced one with a Razor HD LH 2x10x40. Big difference in glass quality and cost.

Here is a deal on a 2x10x42. Its not compact or even close but its a bargain for this level of scope.

Some of my buddies from work, who are not the types to baby their equipment, have great things to say about those Veracities. Would love to try one out some time. Really wish Burris would do another production run of their Fullfields, specifically the 2-7. I have a very hard time finding any verified negative experiences with them. All 3 I own are fantastic.

I wish they offer this reticle for the Veracity. You can only get it on the new Sig HD line and FullField IVs i think.

Ive got a Swift Premier 2x7x40 WA also. Really like the scope other than the horrid eye relief. My eyes are not getting any better and the 2x10x40 was a welcome upgrade to my 2x7. 2x10s though are PRICEY. Even the new Burris HD 2x10x40 is going to be in the $300-350 range. I got my Razor for that on closeout.

Just me... but I prefer 3x9's on my ML's. 2x7 should do everything you need but the little extra can be worth it at times.

When i got my 2x7s my eye sight was better. They are still fine for most shots i would take but i REALLY enjoy the extra magnification when on the bench or shooting for recreation. Ive never been completely happy with 3x for low. Some 2x scopes have way better FOV at 100 yards. Makes a huge difference for me when a shot is only offered for a couple seconds.

I have a Nikon 4X Monarch on one of my Whitelights and love it. Pick it up for $50 because everyone was looking for high power scopes. In NY northern woods unless you're looking down a powerline or a field your probable taking shots in the 45-60 yards. The Monarch is the great for such shoots.
