Seen this floating the interwebz, anyone else seen it? Are we to believe we’ll get 2800fps with BH209 and still have a shoulder left? Can’t imagine a barrel long enough to burn that much blackhorn

From what I have found online the bullet used for that velocity is a new 40 cal 220 grain powerbelt ELR. My guess is its being shot out of a paramount.

I've heard they have a couple of .40 caliber options coming out but my first thought was also a .40 caliber version paramount when I saw the velocity.

One of the shooters from Friendship was testing out a 40 jacketed sabotless with BH209. Probably over a year ago. IIRC just 120gr by volume was getting bullets in the 225gr-250gr range over 2300fps. Bestill has a custom 40 also but i think he is shooting a fair amount of lead.

When you look at the Western load data for 40-65 loads you can see the peak is getting up there. Thats just 31gr by weight and a 410gr bullet. Yet nearly 28kpsi. Imagine 3 times that amount of powder and a 220gr bullet. Its not hard to imagine peak well over 32kpsi with that load. Maybe even close to 40kpsi. Dan at Swinglock mentioned it before when asked about a powder chamber to help reduce powder column length with BH209 in a 40cal. He seemed to imply it was NOT a good idea to have a chamber because peak would climb very fast.

The theory is/was, when BH209 reached a certain peak pressure its curve changes. In other words its burns faster once "critical mass" is reached. :D

Ahh Haa. Awesome read, thank you. I'm really diggin learning all this.

I was excited until I heard it was a .40 caliber. Illegal to deer hunt with in my state.
Illegal to use - Period ? or, just illegal to use during designated ML season? That benefits some of us that can't have CF's any longer & can now shoot ML's at CF capability during reg gun season. We didn't have a rifle season where I'm from, only ML & shotgun. It was always a treat to get to hunt in neighboring states where one can shoot whatever the heck they want, any dang time they want. With NO worries. I really really want to get a used .40 SML or put one together.

One rather neat thing I learned this yr in pushing my Paramounts capabilities was that - at a certain point in increased BH 209 charges that my MV dropped per gr of powder by 40%. Thats why I talked to you about whatelse I wanted to do. I am on that path now.

In my state its all combined into "legal methods". In some states like Colorado the regs for ML vs firearms season are not the same. You can use a 45cal for elk during the firearms elk season from what ive been told. You can not during the ML season.

I can legally use a 40cal here for deer or elk. Although our elk hunts just started this year. I think they had 5 tags up for grabs?. :p I dont need the range of a high velocity 40cal but i sure would like to play around with BH209 and some 400ish grain conicals.

Remember a 50cal percussion roundball shooting 100gr 2f black powder can obtain 2000fps.

It can be used during regular rifle season but I have no interest in buying one just to shoot during regular rifle season.

They have to be coming out with a smokeless muzzloader. That’s the only way you can get that velocity with a 40 220 grain muzzy. I just plug the numbers in my GRT and pressure with blackhorn would be 52kpsi to get that velocity with black horn- about a 180 grain load guessing on what the length would be set off in a 30in barrel. This isn’t accounting for the pressure spikes black horn and model is made using data published by them and is a guess based on pressure being linear- which it isn’t with bh209.

Might you be in MO?

We just had our first Elk season in 2020 where 5 tags were awarded and all 5 people harvested!
