I don’t keep up on it around here? But the last i knew it was NOT Legal to Hunt over Bait here, But that doesn’t stop people from doing it, there are plenty of people that do it on their Property here. They sell Food Blocks at Feed stores, Hardwares Etc around here. I personally think it’s a 💩TTY thing to do, and don’t agree with hunting that way myself. Deer/Elk/Bear, They are like a Dog, if you continually feed them they will keep coming in to Eat, Who doesn’t like an Easy, Free Meal? And then for a “Hunter” to sit and watch the Bait, waiting for the inevitable. NAH, That’s NOT for me. But, to each his own. I can PROUDLY say that Every animal i have ever killed has been 100% Fair Chase, in the Mountains on State/Public Land :lewis:

I absolutely agree. I cannot imagine how DNR can police trailcams. Does this apply only to public land? I don't see how they could apply it to private property.
I’m sure it would be a “report and get a reward” type of situation. I live in Utah and use my trail cams in only one area I hunt. Some years there’s a few elk in there, some years there’s not one. There’s always hundreds of trail cameras. Every water hole will have several on it.
I, personally, have never shot an animal off of bait. I have shot several off of water.

In Indiana, hunting over bait has been forbidden since... I don't know that it was ever allowed. I don't have a problem with this rule. I still have plenty of shooting opportunities without baiting.

Here in Texas nearly everyone uses cameras for a variety of uses.

Some use them for hunting along with monitoring what deer are on the place, some use them to monitor for trespassers/security and some have them on their hogs traps.

These are huge traps made out of a lot of panels of bull panels.
The traps sides are held up in the air. The trapper is sent a picture on his phone when the hogs are in the trap. When there are enough hogs in the trap he sends a signal to the trap and the sides drop. They catch a lot of hogs at a time this way.

What I don't understand is the banning of trailcams. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I agree, that one makes no sense? I have one, it’s old and outdated now, But i had a lot of fun with it when i first moved here 10-11 Years ago. My Trail Camera never Aided/helped me Kill anything, But i seen a LOT of Cool stuff on it.
I know they are COMMONLY Stolen around here, Even chained or Python Cable locked, It’s not uncommon to hear local Rumor, or on Facebook that someones Trail Camera was Chopped off a Tree

Mostly they seem to be targeting cell trail cameras that send pictures to your phone. I guess the theory is you could get a picture, get off your couch and go shoot it??
I guess it’s theoretically possible but not real likely. In NH you can’t use them during the season, VT has no restrictions on them although there was a recent petition to change that.

It works and not just in theory.

I read an article where a guy was targeting one specific buck. He was hunting one stand when he got a notice on his phone that the buck was at a stand nearby. He left his stand and slipped over to the other stand and killed it. Buck was of B&C quality.

Cameras are OK for now, nothing pending that I know of.
No baiting allowed in VA, but food plots are. Agriculture field's are okay to.
Baiting not allowed year round for bear, but starts Sept. 1- Jan 15(?) for deer.
Deer urine also not allowed for hunting, synthetic is okay, all due to CWD.

I own property and hunt over 500 miles from where I live and started using cellular trail cams as scouting tools about 10 years ago, and even with all the data I can collect from the cameras, killing a trophy buck is never a slam dunk. At my places in TX and OK, just killing a deer is easy without bait or trail cams, because there are a lot of deer. My hunting goal is mature bucks with alot of bone on top of their heads, and those animals are very elusive. I hunted the buck I killed in October all of the 2019 season and never saw him from the deer stand. I had hundreds of game cam pictures of him as did my neighbors.
The idea of banning trail cams is like banning guns. It sounds good to a politician who has no idea about the subject they’re making laws for, but in reality, it’s practically an impossible feat.
