I got it done this morning with my newly acquired 12 Gauge UnderHammer, This is a BIG Gobbler, one of my Better ones :lewis: He was about 12 Yards when i “Cut Drive” on him, It was Cold this morning, the Smoke lingered, I could hear him FLOPPING all over, i just sat and enjoyed the Moment. This was a Good turkey season, I killed 2 Nice Gobblers (Filled both my Tags) I had a Friend over on my 1st Gobbler, We had a LOT of Fun, Gotta hear, & see a LOT of Gobblers

Nice work. Good looking bird. Get a weight?

No I didn’t weigh him Tom, I don’t have a Scale that would work for that sorta thing anymore. I have weighed a lot of them in the past. I am confident this one was 20 Pounds, 20-22 Pounds is about as Big as they get here, especially for a true Mountain Bird like this one, it takes an Old Mature Gobbler to hit 20-22 Pounds.

Nice gobbler!!!

When did you get the underhammer 12 bore? That's some real pretty wood on it. Looks like an octagon-round barrel as well. What was your load for the shot? What kind of patterns does it throw?

I take it Harleysboss had something to do with your getting the gun?

Way to go Lew! Just found out my youngest grandson got his first turkey today as well. Problem is he got it with his Stoeger M3000 12 gauge. 😁

I bought it from it Harleysboss :lewis:

It is Octagon to Round, Curly Maple wood. It is a Cylinder Bore “Jug Choked” It sure shoots good for me :) My load was 80 Grains of Swiss 2F, Pushing 1-1/8 Oz of No. 5s

I use overshot Cards ONLY on the Powder (3-4 of them) and 2 of them for the Shot. This is Something i learned from Caywood several years back, it DEFINITELY works, I don’t get the “Dreaded” Doughnut hole Groups this way.

This is how i load (MINUS the Cornmeal Muffin Mix, I feel it is more trouble than it’s worth, in my opinion anyway)

Have you tried the SkyChief load yet? All it is is adding a olive oil soaked, 0.500" thick, fiber cushion wad on top of the over shot card wad covering the shot. It might add some range, and tighten up your shot pattern. It's messy when the oil soaked wad is inserted into the barrel, so having a rag handy while ramming the wad is a good idea. Other than that, there seems to be no drawback to it other than the extra wad, and the time to test it.

The original recipe is as follows.....

Powder charge
Nitro card wad, 0.125" thick
Shot charge
Over shot card wad, 0.050" thick
Fiber cushion wad, 0.500" thick, saturated with olive oil

The original guy that stumbled upon this recipe tried it over & over to prove to himself that it really would stop the donut holes from forming in a shot pattern. Changing the recipe seems to destroy the olive oil soaked wad's ability to get rid of the donut holes. The side benefit of the recipe is that for most cylinder bore barrels, it adds at least 5, sometimes 10 yards to a guns range, while tightening up the pattern.

Testing over on The Muzzleloading Forum, seems to indicate that it also works, at least some of the time, with jug choked barrels.

Very cool mate! I envy your american turkey season, there's just no equivalent here.

Beautiful looking gun, would love to see some more pics of it.

I have read up on the “SkyChief Load” But haven’t tried it yet. I have had such good luck with the “Caywood” Loading procedure that I haven’t tested anything else, I will have to Compare them against one another, It would be a FUN Test to do :lewis:

You would get a kick out of Hunting these Turkey’s!

Some call them the “Poor Mans Elk” :) I would fully agree with that. Some days they are VERY Vocal, and some days they are NOT. Their nature, when the Old Gobbler Gobbles he is letting the hens know where he is at, and they are suppose to come to him. 99.9% of the Time the Old Gobbler with Hens will NOT leave his hens to come to your Hen Call, the hen is supposed to come to him, and since he already has Hens he is NOT Leaving them (Just like a Herd Bull Elk) Your best chance to Kill the OLD Mature Gobbler is to TRY and Get where his Hens are going, and let them bring him right by ya (Just like the Herd Bull Elk) The problem here is you have LOTS of Eyeballs to Dodge ANY form of Movement (Just like the Cow Elk of the Herd) Wild, UNFED Turkey’s are INCREDIBLY intelligent Birds, You move your Finger and it’s OVER!

The long beard Gobblers that most of us are Killing are the 2 Year Olds, They are Mature Birds, Nice long beards, Decent spurs, Full Tail Fan, and good Body Weight. They are on the Outskirts of the Old Mature Gobbler with Hens, Hoping for a Chance to Breed a Hen, The Old Mature Gobbler has kicked their @ss :) (Just like the Satellite Bull Elk) When you Strike a “Lonely Hen“ Call, It is these 2 Year Olds that come RUNNING, This is their Chance for LOVE 😍😘🥰

The exception to Successfully Calling in an OLD Mature Gobbler is When all of his Hens have gone to Sit (Sitting on their Eggs to Hatch them, this is a 28 Day process) Leaving the Ole Gobbler Lonely 😁 TRUE! This is PRECISELY how i Killed mine Yesterday :lewis: This is a PERFECT time to Call these OLD Mature Birds in, Since they no longer have Hens with them, they are more Willing to Come to your Call :lewis:

Nice bird with a cool shotgun! I have birds all around and can't fire a shot. I got a new zipper put in between my shoulders on March 22 and can't trip a trigger for 4 weeks, 3 days and about 10 hrs from now. :wall:

Yes in a moment of weakness...and he wouldn't let me out of the closet until I agreed...I sold my underhammer shotgun. It's definitely a coool piece. I did testing with the skychief load and some were great patterns and some not so. The load that Lewis is using was much more consistent for me in this shotgun. Much less messy too.
