So I recently moved back to Oklahoma, and decided I should take advantage of the muzzleloader season, and not just archery and rifle. I’ve been shooting long range with center fire rifles for a long time now, and used my knowledge gained there to help me with my very first muzzleloader. I wish I would have found this group earlier, but that’s hindsight. Anyway I ended up purchasing a CVA Acura LR-X. I topped it with a Burris RT15. I sourced some 285 gr elr powerbelts, 209 primers, and some blackhorn 209 powder. I played with loads, and landed on 77 gr weighed. According to my ballistic app, this load should retain enough energy to be lethal on deer out to 400 yards. So I practiced out to 400 yards. It proved to be somewhat accurate at 400 yards. Here’s a 5 shot group at 400. I found it’s a lot harder to be accurate with a muzzleloader, than a center fire rifle. So I passed on a couple of decent shooter bucks, hoping my target buck would come in. He never showed, but this guy decided to show up. One of my better deer ever taken. The shot was 200 yards on the dot, and put him down in 10 yards. Bullet entered perfectly behind the shoulder, and exited a little bit far back. But it destroyed both lungs, and did its job. Hunting with a muzzleloader is a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I wish I would have picked this up years ago. I’m hooked now.6BE24188-E97F-4E49-9339-8E50B196F248.jpeg5855997E-0813-44B0-82E1-0C7641CB079A.jpeg396DA2D8-FE43-4966-870E-C797279A83FE.jpegEB6E366E-2120-4EFD-B4C1-00BCA25E7FCB.jpegF2AE2AB5-9160-425B-9A85-D6CFCF79C7F3.jpegD9F0660A-DA97-422A-8864-9994756924FB.jpeg65E0B694-DB39-422F-A584-9FB8732DAAEC.jpeg

Congrats. Great job with a great rifle. I am glad the ELR worked for you. Still some discussion about it's performance on game at dif ranges and velocities.
I’m looking forward to playing with different loads for it. Any recommendations from you guys would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
Good Buck! Good job!
That's a great group @ 400 with Powerbelts and an out of the box muzzy. Impressive indeed.
I have to agree with HatchetJack. While at first glance this 400 yard group might not seem to be very good, in actuality, it is very, very close to being M.O.A.

And, I agree that such a good group with a fairly new rifle in the hands of a first time muzzleloading hunter, using off the shelf components with minimal bench time to really work out a super accurate load; that group is nothing to be ashamed of.

Great target, and congrats on your first muzzleloading deer.

Very nice buck! Welcome to ML hunting, your long range experience paid off. As another Okie welcome to to the forum. Looks like BK territory in photo. Again congrats.
