I was lucky enough to draw a Elk tag for this fall in Colorado during the muzzleloader season. I am very familiar with firearms but have never owned a muzzleloader and come to this site to beg for help and advice. I am looking for suggestions for equipment, projectiles, loads, ect..

I know that powder must be loose and scopes are not allowed in Colorado. So I am considering a peep site but seek any feedback on brands or other options. My goal is that over the next 2 months I can become proficient at 50-100 yards with this setup. Powder recommendations? What supplies do I need to start?

Thanks for any help provided.

Re: Colorado complaint muzzleloader

I'm going to use 90 gr BH 209, 350gr FPB. I'm getting 2 to 4 inch groups at a100. Not great but minute of elk, didn't want to cut QLA off the omega and this load works the best for me. Tried abunch of different bullets that just wouldn't keep a 8 inch group at 100. I have just a basic rear peep that I'm not sure of the brand ( got it off a member here) and I'm using the normal front site. Works better than a imagined just takes practice. What unit did you draw? We are in 12/23/24. I'll let the experts here get you set up with everything you are going to need. Good Luck

I drew a unit 65 cow tag. Will also be doing some scouting in 66 since I am close to drawing it.

FPB?

I think he is talking about these:

I have a buddy who shoots Thors with great results.

He also uses a peep sight with a a white tipped front sight with great accuracy. Not sure the brand.

If I could add to your thread I would like to know this, which guns shoot full diameter bullets best? Are any brands prone to better accuracy in this type of bullet?

I hunt Colorado as well, and have been using a Knight Mountaineer with Williams FP peep sight and a Lee Shaver Globe on the front. I believe Knight has a solid reputation for shooting conicals quite well and I am very happy with the performance my rifle turns in with 460 grain No Excuses and Blackhorn 209 powder. I also recently bought a White Super 91 and a M97 that are very well known for shooting conicals exceptionally well although I have not had a chance to verify that myself, as of yet. Unfortunately, the White's are no longer made and it seems to be getting harder to find used ones in good condition. Plenty of Knight's in the used market though, and the sheer numbers make the odds better for finding one in good shape if your budget calls for it... I did try the Hornady FPB in my Mountaineer and could not get them to shoot at all. The bull I took last September was finished within moments of being introduced to a No Excuses bullet. If you have never hunted elk in Colorado in September, you are in for a treat. Good luck!

I have been using a white bison 540 the last few years with a 535 grain no excuses and 90 grains of 777ff and a 524 grain home cast bullet with the same charge. But this year I'll be testing out my new white super 91 504 with 600 grain home cast bullets. My first year I shot the fiber optic open sights but have since learned that the peep sights are the only way to go for me.

Any thoughts on this muzzleloader for a starter unit. It's 40% off right now. This Mountain rifle version is 2 inches shorter and lighter weight. Will this be a bear to shoot? Will the lighter weight make recoil unbearable with 90-100 grains?

It comes with a scope mount I can remove, but would have to see if the barrel is drilled for a sight on the end of the barrel.

I think you will be fine shooting the MR with 90-100 grns of any powder. It might be a little stout with a 300 grn bullet but really not to bad. It kinda depends on your tolerance for recoil. The MR does come D&T. I have had an Optima for some time and it shoots great.

That's a great price!

The Accura is a good choice. You will first have to by the sizing pack of the Thor's to find correct bullet size. My Optima takes the .503. I recently saw they came out with a bullet that fits all bore sizes. It has slits at the base. Matter of fact I've got some ordered. For measuring powder I prefer the T/C U-View powder measure. I never clean between shots using black horn. For cleaning at home I prefer Butchs Bore Shine.

Has anyone ever put over 100 grains through their white model 97 or ultramag. Doc says they can go up to 150.

Not me, I have two M97's a .504 and .451 the most I have shot is 80gr. of T73Fg and that was a stout load. Accurate, but all I wanted to shoot with a 480gr. conical in the .451. The .504 was shot with 295gr powerbelts to get it on paper. (Good way to use the PB's) both guns are for my grandsons.

Shoot 90 in my 540 bison and 75 in every other white i own thats all my tore up shoulder needs
