I didn’t see a section on Black Bear Hunting on this forum...Anyway’s my buddy and his #18 year old son took out #2 black bears in Virginia...one was #272lbs.dressed out the other #220 gutted..I know this because I drove my big ass down to Va. to help them drag them off the mountain..even though they paid for a guide service (older then me)...Back to the story: My buddies son had this huge! bear cornered in a rock enclave with his .45 cal Muzzle loader and shot it high in the neck...now of course they were using hounds...that big ol bear tore into that 1st hound and killed it instantly! That’s when his father (my buddy) shot the bear with his model #29 S&W..44 Magnum hand gun . game over.!.My buddy didn’t like it when I said he cheated..by using a modern weapon to kill the said bear..lol.. the other bear they got earlier in the week . So we get both bears home skin’em out and render the fat down...boy talk about some good pastry dough! I had this back in my youth...say 1976...anyway’s I’m making Easter Bunny Pot Pie with Bunnys I busted this past Friday with Bear Lard pastry...anyone on this forum do this also?.. if so don’t tell my cardiologist... Thanks Dave..

I bet the guide was not happy losing a dog, it was a good thing they had the handgun

Killed the Hound huh? That would be an EXTREMELY rare Case. My Dad AVIDLY hunted hounds for 40 years, Literally Hundreds on top of hundreds of Black Bear and never Lost a Single Dog to a Bear, I have 2 old Albums here completely full of Pics of them Days.

Here was a BIG Bear with Hounds last summer. This one gave up a LOT of Fat

Bear lard is super for frying donuts. Nothing better.

I have heard that as well Tom, and The Women loved it for Pie Crust. Bear Meat (Depends on where you get the Bear of Course) is Darn good eating, Breakfast Sausage is tough to beat! And I would think much better for ya than Pork?

Are you guys still running dogs up there Lewis?

Not much up here in unit 1 due to the Grizzly bear protection stuff, they give out a few Permits for Hound pursuit on Blackbear here in Unit 1, but i am not up on the Regs on it here? I know they do a bunch of it in the lower units, I don’t do it myself, i just never got the “Bug” for Hound Hunting, My Dad hunted Hound dogs nearly all of my life but I didn’t care a whole bunch for it, To many BUM trips looking for lost Dogs when i was a little kid and it burned me out :D. I know a bunch of these Hound hunter’s around this area, and several of them down as far as St Maries.

I remember my dad, and other hound hunters getting some dogs tore up by bear, But I cannot remember ANY of them ever losing a Dog to a Bear, and that was a LOT of years of hunting them, and more Bear than could ever be remembered. Usually on a Mean Bayed Up Bear, if it got ahold of a Dog, the rest of the Pack would Dive in and Latch on, The Bear would let go and retreat Back to being Bayed.

Did you ever have a bear outright Kill a Hound? Or know anyone that did?

The bear my buddy’s son shot, was backed up in a rock crevice with a small cave/ hole...the guide had 7 hounds ,two charged the bear...one of the dog’s was mauled, the other 6 dogs were called back by the guide and his other handlers secured them .when my buddy’s son shot the bear...two smaller bears bolted from the hole/ cave...the hound that was mauled..didn’t die right then and there but died with in a few minutes on that mountain do to blood loss...I'll try to get the pics for you and email them,it was also videoed by the guides son..I don’t think this fourm would like the video/ pics on here..because I know without pictures it didn’t happen Lol...

Never had any killed, but a few bit up some. I hunted up there some till they closed it. Then mostly from Cda down to Avery. Mostly eastern WA, but a little over around Mt Baker and down around Capitol Forest.

I am looking forward to the day when hound hunting is no longer allowed in Virginia. I did love my Grandma's bear pot pie though...

Well, HOPEFULLY Virginia takes away something that you enjoy doing as well, the Same day they do away with Hound Hunting

Good luck with that....Bear Hunter Association has BIG pockets in the DGIF an VA Legislature, so won't happen I'd say. They were the reason for getting the separate Bear License which had been apart of the regular big game license to cut down on the number of bear hunters an thus save more bears for them.
A vast majority of hunters were against that license including me, but they went around that an got it passed! I have no desire to hunt or kill a bear, but if one happened along while I was deer hunting I might be tempted. I don't hunt public land any longer in bear territory and won't buy their bear license!

I probably should have worded the above better, it just bothers me to see Sportsman that are against eachother’s Sport, (ie- Rifle Guy’s against Archery Guy’s, and Vice Versa, etc. etc.) in this day n age with all of the Anti’s it’s important that everyone passionate about Hunting need to Stand together, Regardless of what Weapon you choose. I for 1 have never been a Big fan of Trapping, Just my Personal feeling, But i would NEVER wish to see it taken away from those that do it Legal, and Ethical

And that's how we lost it!!!! All of it!! If the uninformed public knew the work involved and the amount of game left in the tree to be ran again another day. They might have a different attitude. When bears and lions are in a tree you can identify male and female and size and choose not to take them if you wish. The average boot hunter normally shoots spontaneously and doesn't know what hes got till he rolls it over.

EXCELLENT Post MSalyards!! I grew up in Western Wa (spent 38 years there) i Seen Hound Hunting be taken away there. I despise that place, that is why i moved here to Idaho. Hunters/Sportsman need to stand together!

100% agree on standing together. I'm not a super big fan of the folks shooting stuff at really long distance, but as long as it's legal and they do so ethically I will never tell them they shouldn't.

I know a couple of guys that used to hound hunt, they put in a lot of time and money training their dogs and buying radio collars and such. ALL of them have got out of it now due to wolves and the threat they are to their hounds.
I hear of a lot of folks that are against baiting bears too, they think it somehow guarantees getting a bear. Here's my example of how true that is.
My family has property on Craig Mountain that I have been going to camping and hunting since my first memories. In all of that time I've been going there, I have never seen a bear...driving, hunting, etc. I have seen stumps torn apart and other bear sign quite frequently, just never the bear itself. It is very timbered and has two good sized canyons on each side of the property. Other places I hunt with big clearcuts I have seen bears many times. Tells you a little about how easy it is to see a bear in person in that kind of terrain.

About 7 years ago a friend asked me if he could put a bear bait on our place. He asked if I would also help in keeping it baited and said we could communicate to each other when the other wanted to hunt it. I agreed, and he met me up there. I had zero experience in baiting bears, and couldn't wait to have a freezer full of bear summer sausage. I had a spot in mind for him, and watched as he chained a barrel to a tree. He baited it with bread and used fryer grease. We hung the bait permit and a game camera in a nearby tree. He told me that the bait had to be refilled every 3 days once a bear started hitting it. I think that first year it took about 9 days for a bear to find it. The average now is anywhere from 2 to 5 days. With both of us able to trade off it wasn't too bad to keep it baited, and to stay stocked up on bread. Fryer grease is easy to get from restaurants, as they have to pay someone to take it otherwise. My friend has since had a family and doesn't do much baiting anymore, he just has one main spot he does every year in comparison to when he used to put in several baits. I have kept up baiting on my place every spring since. It is definitely a commitment to get up there every three days to keep the bait full and to stay caught up on having bait. To keep it from being really expensive you have to find places getting rid of expired stuff. The season is one month long. The bait can't be put in until the first day the season opens. I've found that once the bait is found, it normally takes about two weeks before the bigger boars are willing to come in when there is shooting light. If you let the bait run out, well most times that means it will be several days before a bear comes in to it again and it is like starting over. So, a week to basically have the bait discovered, then another two weeks for the bears to get comfortable enough to come in during a bit of shooting light. That leaves one week to actually do some hunting on it. In that week you can only hunt when you have time off work and the wind is right. In the 7 years of doing this, I have shot exactly one bear off of it.
I'm sure there are others that do much better, but for the time I have to put into it, family obligations, work obligations, that's what it has amounted to. I do greatly enjoy the game camera pics I have gotten from it. But, I've found that baiting is much of the slam dunk that most folks who haven't ever done it seem to think it is.

I’m still trying to get the pics and video for you Idaholewis..from my buddy, to e-mail them to you..But I remember in the the early 1980’s down In southern Virginia I use to deer hunt with the local’s that ran hound dogs across many counties...with side band C.B. radio’s...they ran those buck’s into the ground..I never cared for it,being a Yankey boy from the Mason Dixion...but it was new to me at the time also.I’m not at all against using hound dogs running deer or treeing bears but at the time in my early 20’s ...it was definitely different..have been on many hunt’s since then...Virginia still does this to this day ,and I’m 100% for it..It really sucks when a guy/gal post’s a nice clean kill and P.E.T.A.get’s a hold of it..just like they have done with the Grizzly hunt’s lately...in Canada and elsewhere..

We used to put bear grease on our leather gloves. My buddy and I were checking my beaver sets, I got my gloves wet, they froze.( About 10 Deg ) I put them on the warm truck intake manifold to dry a bit. We drove to the next set ( 15 min away ) and as we were getting ready to head out, my buddy commented about someone having a BBQ back in the woods, it smelled awesome. Yup, my leather gloves, boy they smelled good..lol
