So about 14 years ago I purchased a knight lk93 in .54 caliber for hunting. I had been around muzzleloader since I was a kid but mostly sidelocks. I purchased this one and hunted with it a few times but life and hunting other things got in the way. Well been kinda thinking about try muzzleloaders again and remembered I had this tucked away at my dads place. Well I picked it up and other than not cleaning it nearly as well as I should have it seems good to go. I gave it a really good cleaning but now I want to update it a bit but a ton has changed since I last shot this gun. So I’ve got a few questions.

1. It currently has the #11 nipple but I also have a musket nipple. Washington just changed to 209 primers and enclosed ignition but from the research I’ve done the 209 breach plug and hammer assembly is not needed?

2. I want a peep sight so anything that fits a Wolverine should be good to go? What about a front globe sight? I know I need a new base first any idea on size?

3. Triple 7 is what I was thinking about using. I know my guns max is 120 grains black powder but I need to reduce it by 15 or so percent by volume for triple 7 is that right? I can just use a normal black powder measure. Should I just stick with pyrodex?

4. Not a lot of .54 stuff in the way of bullets was thinking about using the no excuse bullets for deer/elk. Seems like a good price and should work at inside 150 yards. What would be a good starting load?

Nothing wrong with the LK-93, good little rifles. If it were me I would stick with the #11 cap and use a Mag type cap like the CCI Mag or the RWS. To switch to a 209 Primer you would have to change the Breech plug and possibly the hammer depending on which hammer came with your rifle. IF your hammer has a little cone tip in the center of the face it would work on the primer. IF it is flat, then it will not work on primers and would have to be changed. There really is not big advantage to using the 209 primers in your plunger rifle. 777 will work just fine in it, as will Pyrodex or even real Black, 777 is a bit hotter powder than Pyrodex. I would start with about 90 Grain by volume and work up. Use what ever Volumetric powder measure you have for Black powder it will work with all the subs.

I can't help with the Peep or Conical's but plenty here can.

I used to have an LK93 54 cal. Nice handy rifle. I set mine up with a williams FP peep sight and a low ramp with fiber optic and front sight hood. Can recall the product number for the sights. I have tried the no excusses in the 54 cal. They were to under sized for my bore. Very little if any loading resistance. I bought my own mold and poured my own. There are sabot options for the 54 but mostly I think you will have to order the supplies on line. If you can find them, the Hornady Great plains bullet shot ok for me. I shot 90 grns of Goex BP FFG in mine. Swiss would be much better and of course 777 and Mag #11 or RWS Dynamite caps.

You can call Williams if you're not sure which sight will fit your gun. williamsgunsight.com But experience tells me to get a lower front sight than they recommend. Like Harley mentioned, a "low ramp" front sight. Particularly if you are planning to shoot +400 grain lead, like the Hornady Great Plains, or No Excuse lead. Otherwise, you'll run out of adjustment on the rear sight before you can zero at say, 100yds.

I’m not really into the whole sabot idea. Seems very expensive honestly and I like the idea of a full bore size bullet. I’m going to try a box of the no excuses just going to be weary of the sizing. Appreciate the help. So during my cleaning I noticed some rust (which I was able to clean out) but there a bit of pitting any thoughts on jb bore paste for getting it smooth again? I know it’s something I’m going to have watch.

Unfortunately pits means metal that is now gone. But depending on if it is real light you might get it cleaned up more using the JB. It is a great cleaner and polish. But it probably will not get rid of the pitting. I would really scrub the crap out of it with maybe 100 strokes of JB turning the Very tight patch and adding a dab more JB occasionally. Then really scrub it good to get all the JB out. You need to then treat it with a good Synthetic Oil. I prefer Montana Extreme Bore conditioner. With Pitting you will need to keep up with the Cleaning and oil to prevent further damage. IF it were mine, After the scrubbing and cleaning, But before the oil I would coat the bore with DynaTek Bore Coat to seal up those Pits, it would coat them but not fill them in.

Lot of Knights still shoot great even with a pitted bore. I have never shot conicals so have no input for you there. But there is not a thing wrong with them and in some places that is what you must use depending on the state your in. Plus some just prefer them. Sabots and bullets don't have to be expensive. Most of us buy Bullets and sabots separately and in bulk, not those combo packs. For most of your hunting (Deer and Black Bear) needs a good 300 to 350 grain bullet like the .500 325gn Speer Unicore, .500 330gn Rainier HP, .500 300gn or 350gn XTP put in a MMP 50x54 purple sabot will work great.
