I am casting some 45 caliber bullets for my LRH barrel. The bullets are 45 colt bullets (200 grain). They have a couple of grooves in them. I have a couple of tubes of bore butter. I was wondering if it would be alright just to lube them up right before I load them with the bore butter? Any better ideas? Thanks.

If its cool enough outside so it doesn't just run all over the place. Maybe put it in the fridge for a little while just before heading to the range. Swipe some on the groves, load, fire-enjoy. Of course there are much better lubes but that will work for starters.

Any suggestions about the better lubes? I am new to these types of bullets.

NASA Lube from Bull Shop Bullets! Awesome stuff!

While I personally have not used it I hear a lot of people love the NASA lube.

I would put my bullets in a pan, melt the lube and fill all of the groves. Let harden for about 75 minutes and push the out of the lube. If necessary then put them through your sizing die.

What Sabotloader Said :lewis: I Always Recommend Dan’s NASA Lube

A friend of mine is using Straight Crisco with Really Good Results (It makes good sense to me why, it’s Thin) i have not personally tried it? I know Bullet Lube can play a BIG Role in Accuracy. Dan of Bullshop is who explained the importance of it to me, I started experimenting with Harder vs Softer Lubes, Dan was ABSOLUTELY Correct, There was a BIG difference in accuracy! I shoot for the Softest Lube i can Make that will stil Hold in the Grooves, My Lube is Always on the Soft Side.

Lanolin is what gives Lube “Tackiness” Beeswax Stiffens. These 2 ingredients “tinkered” in to Crisco until desired texture is Reached could make something Good :lewis:

I've used bore butter in the past for bullet lube works good if you use bullets in a few months, otherwise it dries out.
Now when I make my own I've been using Muzzleloading Technologies PowerLube. Don't know if it still available got it from White's old web site.

I have used it as a bore prep after cleaning with solvent. When it is really cold out it gets thick and makes it very difficult to load my T/C Scout 50 cal pistol. Probably not such an issue with a long gun as the butt rests on the ground and you would just have to lean on it a bit more.

I have successfully used SPG on Maxi-balls. I have also had success with home made 50:50 beeswax and extra virgin olive oil which is what I'm using now. The Maxi-balls take a gigantic amount of lube so I'm not sure it's valid data for normal grease groove bullets. I am interested to hear what others are using.

WVAED, Bore butter will work as Bullet lube, it has been doing so for many years, But there are MUCH better Choices out there! Bore Butter is a NUISANCE When it’s Cold out, it turns Hard as a Brick Which renders it useless, And in the Hot Summer months it Melts/Runs. A good Quality Lube such as Bullshop’s NASA will Maintain itself MUCH MUCH better in Hot/Cold. Also, Don’t buy in to the “Season your Bore” BS with Bore Butter. Clean your Bore Down to Steel after each Shooting Session, Dry it THOROUGHLY, and Apply a Good Quality Gun oil to protect it. Leave the Seasoning to Cast Iron Cook Ware, Such as Skillets, etc. :lewis:

Yeah thanks Lewis. I never use bore butter for "seasoning" or protecting the bore. I clean with water and a little dawn and then alcohol patch, then run a patch with barricade down my bores. That has been my method for quite some time now and it works great. I am going to try that NASA lube. Do you just apply it with your fingers to the bullets individually or is there some more efficient way of applying it to the bullets?

I would melt the lube put your bullets in a pan and pour the lube until all groves are covered. Let the lube garden for about 60-75 minutes and the push the Bullets out and then sized if required. I melt thevlube in a double pot. Bottom pot has water.

Here are some links on how to pan lube your cast bullets. They all work, you just have to find the method you like best. I personally use a double boiler and use a silicone bread pan. I let the lube harden for 60-75 minutes and then push the bullets out. But you can see others use a pie pan. Whichever method you like will work.
