I just ordered the 45-255S mold, hopefully I ordered it correctly.
I ordered a 2-cavity mold, I’m thinking I’ll send it out and have one cavity hollow pointed if that can be done.

I explained elsewhere on this site that I bought lead .429 255g HP and .429 305g HP from G.T. Bullets. They shoot excellent in my Wolf. My buddy tried them in his Traditions and they work excellent as well. (1 1/2 inch groups at 120 yards) They are inexpensive and the hollow points are craters. The 305s chrony at 1779 at 15 ft from muzzle with 100g 777. All this talk about casting your own. Im jealous. Id love to do that but a guy can only has time for so many hobbies.
That’s a lubed bullet? Are you using them in a sabot? Why .429 rather than one of the .452 bullets?

This is the mold I ordered.

CatamountRob. I had 500 sabots left from years ago. I was cleaning out my stuff this winter when it was too cold to do anything else. Dont know why I had 500 of them but good for me. They were green and I needed the bullet to match so I chose the .429. They shoot excellent. The bullet in the pic above is beautiful. Id like smooth sides but it doesnt seem to matter for my gun. Id like to have about 500 of the bullet above in pure lead.

Can anyone tell me roughly what the diameter and depth of the hollow in a T/C Cheapshot bullet is? If not, I’ll just buy a pack.
Got my mold yesterday, just about a week after placing the order. That’s pretty darn good.

After careful measuring, using markers & digital calipers apparently the recess is "about" 4.5mm or .177 in. 4.5 mm wide x 4.5mm deep. This was verified
"Spoiler alert" using a common projectile as seen. A .177 BB.
Perhaps you could incorporate this to create your hollowpoint.

Almost a 3 year old thread but instead of starting another I thought I would add to this one. Missouri Bullets casts a .452 sized, 250 grain RNFP bullet that is Brinell 18 in hardness. They call in their "Pin Busters" bullet. A box of 500 is around 53.00 now. Length is .661+/-. I have about 300 left out of a box and plan on shooting some of them to see how accurate they can be. Be a less expensive option for practice, plinking, coyotes or whitetail I would think.

I use a 38/55 hard cast out of a 16" barreled marlin lever gun. Shot a nice 9 pointer a few years ago and it went in center chest and exited from his right hip and kept going. I like a flat nose hard cast for about everything and they are cheap to shoot. I've never put one in a sabot though. It will be a fun project.

Catamountrob,That is something I have been wanting to know for awhile.I could get behind a 200-250 grain lead bullet with a sabot. Will those be for a 50 cal or 45 cal?

I cast RB’s in .32, .36 and .45 for my sidelock rifles, but I’ve always bought bullets for my .50 inlines.
I was thinking about buying a Lyman .44 Elmer Keith mold to use with a sabot. It’s a 245 grain bullet.
Maybe the Accurate 455S mold would be better? It’s a 255 grain bullet for a sabot.
This would be for hunting as well as low cost range shooting. I get scrap lead flashing for free because my wife’s family owns a masonry contracting business, which makes casting my own attractive.
Thoughts? Pure lead or hardened? Is there a better mold to use? Would something with a hollow point be better?
We have been using 80 grains of BH209 with a 250 grain bullet. I would think a lead bullet would work fine at that velocity?
I have good luck with a accurate 401 in a light blue Harvester /and my 45 cal maxi in a black harvester see the 200 yd me and the neighbor shot once each ,guess the maxis shoot good . Every thing shown is 40-1 or pure .I had Tom make the44-345P for paper patching in my 45 fast twist

Being that most shooters use jacketed bullets in the sabots I don't see any reason to use pure lead. I'd definitely alloy them up some to harden them a little. Even my paper patch bullets I shoot out of my muzzys I alloy to about 10 BHN.
I'd say any bullet you like in the 240 - 300 gr range would work fine for you.

I used to use my cast 45-70 bulllets and swage them down to .452. I shot quite a few in my Encore and TC Impact. They shot just as good as any other bullet. I think it is a 330 gr bullet.

I’m casting the LEE .430 310 gr bullet for shooting in sabots. I haven’t shot yet though. They drop at .430-.431, and I size to .429 as they fit better in the sabots.

I’ve shot my cast lee 405gr 458 flat base bullets in black harvester crush rib sized to .454 and full size in the orange hcr and the mmp or whatever they call them and they shot great in three different barrels. I bought this mold a few months ago and plan on using them in the 50/452 sabot.

I've been shooting some of my cast 240 grain PC Penta-points out of my Knight LK-II. They are accurate and I know from their performance out of my 44 Special and Magnum, they will drop hogs in their tracks.
