Thanks guy’s, Wild Turkey are sure a lot of Fun to Hunt :lewis: These Old Mature Gobblers with hens are a real challenge to get! Getting 2 of these guy’s back to back was Lucky! Older Mature birds with hens just don’t come to Calls, in nature the Hen goes to the Gobbler, when the Ole Gobbler has hens with him he will answer your calls, but RARELY EVER Come to them, The best chance you have with these Old Gobblers are to get between him and his Hens somehow, if you can get the Hens to come to you, The Ole Boy will come with them :lewis:
The Gobblers we usually get are the 2 year olds, they have nice long beards, and are nice Mature birds in every way, But they have been beat up by the Old Gobblers (3 plus years Old) that has Hens. When you start calling and get a nice Tom to charge in, it will almost Gauranteed be a 2 Yr Old Bird.

I used my Cheap single Shot 12 Gauge “Beater Gun” Ole Reliable :)

Beauty Lewis, Congrats. I was typin out a messg on another thread in here a lil bit ago, when 5 Osceola Toms & a few young hens ( Us older Toms chasing much younger females, we can't help it. Only, they catch them & now I can't any longer ) stroll right past my bdrm window
( Nuthin new at all ). So I grab the Pedersoli 12ga & put my house shoes on LOL ( I'm still wearin the shorts & tee shirt I slept in last night ) & I headed out the side door for a lil stalk across our back 7-8 acre field with a few trees. I did my best to use the trees to block my bad intentions, but they are smarter & have much better eyesight than I & I was BUSTED within my first 20-30yds out. Whenever I get busted on a turkey hunt or stalk I always hear what my kin in Wva told me when I was a youngin " Them damn turkeys ( Easterns in that region ) can see ya a thinkin & hear ya a changin yer mind boy " & a warm hearted smile always appears. I got to about 50yds from them ( the 3 old long beards nearly draggin the ground ) were bunched up in the fence corner by themselves ) 2 remembered they can fly & went over the neighbors fence ( a real " King Richard " type lol ) so I fired the left MOD barrel loaded with 80gr bv Goex ff w/lubed wonder wad then plastic shot cup w/1.25 oz #5 shot ( its all I have here) & a card over shot wad. BOOM ! I can barely see old Tom fly over the fence completely UNHARMED!!!! A TK200 woulda put them tailfeathers on my wall! I shoulda just grabbed the .40 Seneca fast twist I just got from someone ya might know LOL ( You have its twin ) & a 180gr XTP 10mm & shot the one I wanted right off the porch & ROBBED them of what must have been ENTERTAINMENT of watchin my old rebel azz in shorts & effin house shoes ( Hiney white legs lmfao ) thinkin I'm ACTUALLY SNEAKIN UP ON THEM LMAO. Anyways I hope ya enjoyed the story as much as I always enjoy readin yours & eatin that big ole Tom too. Kind regards always, Old Turkeyless Tom lmao

Congratulations. You are so right about the difference with 2 year old birds and 3 year olds. I can only tell the difference by the size of the spur.
As I type this, two birds are strutting down the driveway. Just a great time of the year.
Are your birds transplanted Rio's from Texas? In Oregon that has been a very successful move by our state from the early 70's.
In the past, I spent several days trying to arrow a turkey, they are tough to bring down with a bow. A friend of mine and myself are trying to get a bird with the muzzleloader shotgun that will beat the state record bird of 10 2/16".
Nice job on the hunt, and a great picture.

Yes I was taught the same thing to attempt to put yourself between them ( way more often than not, it's not easy to do or be successful ) bc of old toms when hen'd up won't leave tail to go chase tail. There is wisdom in that that more than once I wish I had had LOL But you do have a chance to call hot hens to you or your decoys & old toms will follow. I started turkey hunting a long time ago & I've never gotten a hen'd up long beard to split from them to seek out my calls. Kind regards

Congrats, nice bird indeed. Looking forward to the season myself. April 6 is opening day here in Oklahoma.
My youngest brother went to boot camp & ait in Ft Sill Ok. He was stationed there too a cpl times. I was fortunate enough to have gotten to go on a few Rio hunts with him & a cpl elk & deer hunts too. I could tell ya a cpl " drunken midnight armadillo golfing stories on post too that now won't get him into the brigg" too lol It was absolutely beautiful out there. Turkey hunting in Ok was much much harder than where I'm from. World of difference in just about everything except that they are both wild turkeys. When they can see you tryin to locate them or setting up for MILES from the roost or freakin ground too for that matter. Nuthin to break up the perfectly flat terrain except a hedge row at property boundries as far as the eye can see. Mt Scott stood out like a 3rd boob on yer ole ladies back out there. But I loved the wide open country there. True feelin of freedom. Happy hunting

I'm still a newbie out here being a New Enlander. Have only lived here a year.
Where I am here in the southeast, it's hilly and wooded kinda like back home.
I planned to travel out to the Black Kettle national grasslands for Rio Grande turkeys but not sure now with this virus stuff. Have to play it by ear I guess.

Right on, I get it. Bein smart & safe. I have been in a bunch a states & usually all over them too, not just visit a town or marina but explore & create my own adventures on the freakin fly. I had a besty thats like me in that regard & we could be on a 3 mi round trip beer run & end up 3-4 states away by mornin. Or start out on a fishin trip in Chesapeake bay & end up in the outter banks tuna, mahoo, or marlin fishin by the next morn. Many times we've gotten on our 1977 Harleys we both had & " go for a putt " and end up who knows where with who nows who, doin alot of stuff we dont or barely remember & gone for days on end. We did have some trouble keepin our women around, none found any of our antics funny at all. We covered a heck of alotta ground & water & have many many stories to tell. Explore Ok. It really was pretty awesome out there. If ya like american history & native american history, Ok has lost of really fascinating places & things to see. I got to see a lot of it there including being atop Medicine bluff & did several canoe trips down Medicine creek, check out all that stuff. Kind regards

I like the recipe, gonna have to try it if I score this season. I'm still hoping to get a bird with my crossbow. Came real close the last season I hunted 2 years ago.

It’s funny you mention “State Record” When i first moved here I had NO IDEA there was such a thing? (a Record Book for Turkey?) I killed a GIANT Gobbler my First year living here that NO DOUBT would have Been a New Record, He had a ROW of Beards, He had like 6 or 8 Beards, The Beard Out Front was the Longest, and Each beard after that got Shorter, the last couple being just a Few inches long. I had NO IDEA that i had Just Harvested a Unique/Special Bird? I Skinned him out, Boned the Meat out, And Got Rid of the Carcass, Beards, Spurs & All. I have never seen another Bird like that one Since
