Hello everyone. I am new to muzzleloaders and I am planning on doing the muzzleloader hunt in idaho this year for elk. My question is I have two rifles available to me right now. One is a knight Mk85 that is used but is in really nice condition that has the #11 and 209 set up for 150$

My other option is a CVA hunterbolt for 120$ that is older but hasn't been shot. I haven't been able to find much info about them so I am leaning towards the MK85 even though it's used and already has the #11 with it so it should be idaho legal?

Thank you in advance anyone that can help.

Ok so a further inspection revealed a little rust in the breech. Is this something that can be fixed easily?

If it is just a little that not too bad. You can scrub it out and just keep it oiled up. The more important place to look is the Bore of the barrel. Is it stainless or Blued? For Idaho you will need the #11 cap ignition. The 209 is just not worth the trouble. The MK was designed for the #11 caps.

For sure the mk-85. I had a hunterbolt. It will shoot ok. And its inexpensive. But the comparison is apples to oranges. Top quality versus an entry level.

I'm kind of partial/bias for the MK85 for hunting in Idaho. See avatar, left. Not the highest tech, but simple, and completely reliable, with #11 caps. If the barrel is good, I think that's a very good option for that price range.
Never heard of the hunterbolt, but the MK-85 is a classic. Maybe there's a reason.

All day every day - the MK 85! Even if it not perfectly pristine you can clean it up as best you can and use it.

These are my Idaho MK's

I don’t know anything about the CVA you speak of? But i do know and understand the MK-85, Great Rifle!! My only complaint is the in Depth Cleaning procedure to get the MK Clean to my Satisfaction (personal thing :)) The MK-85 is a VERY well Built Rifle, It was way ahead of it’s time. Knowing what i do about mine, I would pick the MK-85 without hesitation!
