That is some serious damage. Several years ago I had a cartridge failure on a 7mag it blew the primer pocket and 1/3 of the case head. Stock was in 3 pieces, floor plate blown off, follower and part of spring on the bench between my hands. Damaged the bolt and jambed the action. Someone told me I had a bad day and I had to correct them as it was a very good day because I survived, same with the person who survived this catastrophe.
 
There are a bunch of videos on line of people doing this intentionally. From the ones I watched, the most remarkable thing is just how well the rifles hold together. Lots of hot gas escaping and mags blown but surprisingly few parts flying off.
In most of them, the bullet actually made it out the barrel, that might explain why the damage in the link above is greater than some of the others?

You can achieve something similar by putting a mix of 12 gauge and 20 gauge shot shells in your ammo bag.
 
I have had two of those in myshop in the last five years
Both where range /sighting more than one AR
