Can anyone tell me how 209 primers do in the rain? Will they still go off if they have been subject to rain all day?
Thanks
John

I would be more concerned about the powder getting too damp to fire, than the 209. Im don't think I've had a 209 not go off. But i have had misfires that i couldn't explain 100% and wrote off to the weather.

Your better 209 are sealed. The problem is a sabot does not seal the barrel so moisture gets in to the powder real easy, but if you wax your 209's and seal the end of the barrel with, finger off rubber glove ,balloon, tape or a piece of sheet rubber and a rubber band you can keep the moisture out. I have had thoughts about putting a waxed or greased wad under the sabot but have not got around to trying that yet.

I bet the poly wads from Buffalo Arms would seal better than a sabot. In 45cal they are .463. The 50s are a claimed .512 OD.

Chapstick might work for waxing the 209s.

some years ago a few of us were standing around camp the day after a wet season drinking coffee and guys started to fire off their rifles to go home. several failed to fire. I dropped my 209 primer in my coffee and proceeded to drink and watch. when everyone had finished I picked out my primer and asked for bets on my rifle firing. several almost reached for their wallet but no money was put up.

bang!

i had tested it before. i don't know how long it takes to degrade one, but 4 or 5 minutes wont cause a FTF.

I've never had an issue with #11's or 209's in the rain. I take 2 weeks off to hunt every year and am out there rain or shine. I don't take any precautions other than tapping off the barrel. They've always gone off for me.

Don't have 209 muzzleloader but have shot 3-4K (I use to trap/skeet shoot) of them in rain or shine. Never had one miss fire.

Never had any 209s fail to fire but when I used musket cap they would often be a soaked mess and not go off.

I’ve had spares in my pocket go through the wash with a double rinse, that I’ve pulled out of the bottom of the washer that still went off. I was surprised. Lol

I think it would take a super soaking to affect them.

I have been in a stand from one hour before any sunlight was visible until 30 minutes after legal light, with rain showers off and on all day, and the rifle fired when I got back to the house and "unloaded" it. It was the first day of my first muzzleloader season using an inline muzzleloader. It was back when I was in the habit of loading a fresh charge/load each day. I was using BH209, a Western plug, a W209 primer, and had a finger cot on the muzzle. It's not very scientific, but it worked.
