Have a MZ Elk hunt planned this Sept. As usual, I will be providing the weapontry for my Son and Brother.

I’ll have every thing tuned up and sighted in. The plan is to have them take some “ confidence “ shots just prior to opening day. FYI... If lucky enough to have an encounter, all shot will be < 50 yards. Probably more like 25 yards.

One will be with BH 209 and I’m good with leaving fouled in a stainless barrel for the next week.

The second will be T7 in Stainless. I’m thinking a alcohol patch swab and hunt for the week leaving the breech and BP fouled. The bore would only be partially cleaned.

Any experience with T7 for a week out there.

Yes, I have with no issues in white S91. My brother does it also in his omega that's when I tried it. Not my favorite thing ,but so far so good .

Shoot! Larry I use T7 mostly and hunt all season on what I call a semi-fouled bore in my SS Knights. I do not use the alcohol patch that you have suggested just a slightly damp Blue Windex patch. But, at any time if I suspect the bore got wet, rain wet or dripping water wet - I will dry it with patches as soon as possible.

Another shoot! I leave the hunting load in all season also or until I shoot it.

Well, now that I think about I do a lot of other things wrong also. Like the rifle comes in the house every night stored vertically in the back room then out again in the morning.

I hunt Colorado elk in September and my White/Knight rifle is clean and dry to begin with. My first shot is no different than subsequent shots because I swab with a patch between shots. My shots are essentially all on a clean barrel. Patch is damp with 50% Hoppes and 50% Isopropyl alcohol. The reason I go through the added trouble of swabbing between shots, even during range practice, is because I am unwilling to go through a 10 day hunt with any powder fouling in my bore. Once damage is done due to corrosion it can't be undone. My understanding is that the nature of black powder and substitutes is unforgiving and my rifles are worth the precautions I take. I practice just like I hunt and it works for me...
I would like to claim I arrived at this strategy all on my own, but a very well respected rifle builder that did some work for me shared this advice with me. Good luck on your hunt.

I also hunt on a clean barrel, and my range sessions are swabbing between shots . if I leave the gun fouled I feel like I need a shower, or my oil in my truck is overdue. just me I don’t want to ruin any of my guns, and I haven’t had any problems. you could probably get away with it,but the thought of pitting a gun scares me

my buddy leaves his Encore fouled all season with 777, even says he left it from season to season in a very dry house and says he has never had any problems, I cant do this but maybe a couple days at most(drives me crazy to) but usually clean as soon as done hunting.. I hunt on clean barrel usually but depends on gun.

I foul my bores the night before I am going to hunt and the gun will hold the charge until either the season ends or the tags are filled. As soon as the shooting is over the guns get emptied of charges and cleaned to the max.

Thanks for the input Fellas. As I suspected, some would never leave it fouled and some have no problem. I’m leaning toward semi fouled for the 7 days and then a good scrubbing. I’m not too worried about POI differences as shots will be <50 yards.

With any luck, at least one will be discharged on day one of the season! Two shots would be fantastic but I don’t want to be greedy.

From what I've been told by Doc White. If you don't want to foul your bore with a 30gr squib load, and worry about the residue possibly impacting your bore, then fire a couple #11 or Musket Caps. That will ensure the oil in your breech plug is burnt, the flash channel is clear and will slightly fowl your bore. The good thing is the powder residue from the #11 or Musket caps is not corrosive.

I swab out the bore with Windex and dry, run dry patch down to the BP. Fire cap/Primer run that patch up and down and remove to check flame to patch. Repeat firing the cap/primer on the patch a total of 3 times. Load and hunt all season on that load. If I shoot, I swab out the bore and reload. Stays that way to end of season whether I shoot Pyrodex or BH. I know some think that is crazy with Pyrodex, but my MK-95 shot Pyrodex (Pellets and Loose) for a Lot of seasons this way and bore is as bright and shiny as the day I got it on 1997.
