I understand what you’re saying. But every ML I own leaks to some extent. Compared to my Knight and BP Xpress the CVA has very little. I would assume less blowback would mean less flame cutting and a matter of replacing the breach plug and or modules at some point?

Permanently fix that BP Xpress by changing the OEM breech plug out to the Arrowhead Gen2 plug. Problems WILL be solved completely and permanently.

Been to the range 2 times with my Paramount now. First time only shot 6 or 7 times to get it zeroed at 100, but yesterday I put another 20 through it, roughly 10 40cal 260gr Dead Centers (didnt love them) and 10 more of the 180 ELRs. The blow back issue is really odd. On my rifle it was only every 4 or 5 shots. The dirty ones came out filthy all over. On the others the variflame adapters came out sparkling clean. I haven't measured them yet, but I almost suspect the ones with a lot of blow back may be a hair shorter so they didn't compress the spring as well? I reached out to CVA this morning an they responded within 30 min to let me know they were sending an upgraded bolt head spring that will seal it better. When I asked about the details they said - It is stiffer the one you have can be compressed by pinching it between your fingers and the replacement cannot easily be crushed. Great customer service! On a side note, results were good with the ELR and 105gr (wt) of 209. Three shots touching at 100yd. I'm still a bit recoil shy though so I am working to get used to the trigger and the jump without flinching and pulling the shot. I think the group will shrink a little when I get used to it. Overall this is a really nice sub $1K easily 400+ yard unmodified factory rifle. I think some minor tweaks will have this thing shooting awesome. And I cant wait until we see more results from tests with other custom bullets. I have some 250gr 40cal Pitman AccuMax bullets on the way. Will try them with a Harvester blue crush sabot and a tad lighter charge of 209 and post results in the coming weeks.

The 1-22 twist might be marginal with the 250gr Pittman. That bullet is rather long. In a 1-20 at 2400fps the JBM stability rating is just a little over 1.3 which is about the minimum. Look at the 225gr Pittman or the 250gr Fury. Both are shorter than the 250gr Accumax.

I have one. Been to hot to shoot here the last couple weeks. Plan on doing more testing this week. I will say so far I’m very pleased. No leaking that I am aware of and less than a MOA at 200 yards. My expectations were to consistently shoot 6” or better at 400 yards. I’m confident it will after the 200 yard groups. Only shot the PowerBelts so far. Have several different Parker bullets I want to try. If I get out this week I will post my results.

ok cva sent me two new bolt springs (a spare is always nice) to replace the original, with a link to a video. The spring is definitely beefier and allegedly designed to prevent blowback issues. I will get a chance to shoot this Thursday and I will report back. Also CVA has in there new catalog a 209 Breach plug specifically for the paramount, however no one including CVA has it yet. They have 108 on backorder at CVA 109 with my order today. I would like to try that as an alternative just because that vari-flame is too much time cleaning sealing issues etc. I guess I'll get it when I get it, This muzzleloader business is teaching me patience. hahahaha

Tried 8 shots with the new spring. Its better but it still leaks. Appears some variflame adapters are more sealed than others. About 3 I pulled out clean and 5 had some form of blowby. Hoping the 209 plug once it becomes available both is leak free and is still accurate.

Thanks for the info. I am brand new to muzzloading and this is my first ml. Anyhow I am not familiar with Luke but I see his name in various posts. I'd love to make this gun better as it's very accurate so far. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Got out to shoot sat but was cut short by the rain. The target below is two, three shot groups at 100 yards. The top one is with the PowerBelt ELR 280 grain with 100 grains by weight of BH209. The lower one is with Parker 275 Match Hunter sized to .4505 with the same charge behind it. Never claimed to be a great shooter and I really believe I pulled the last shot on bottom just a hair. First 2 cut the same hole. Used one dry patch between every shot and allowed to cool for 10 minutes. Yes there was a little blowback evident after shooting. This ML is a shooter and hard to imagine what’s it capable of in better hands. If someone comes up with a better ignition system I will try it as long as I get the same accuracy. If not, I don’t mind a few minutes cleaning the small amount of residue left behind. Also shot a 3 shot 200 yard group with the PowerBelts at just under 2” and then rain moved in. Still lots of playing and testing to do. I will post more results if anyone is interested.

Razor, antman, and Brad,

Thanks for all your reports, and if any of you get that 209 breech plug, please do share. Looking forward to any and all information you guys can provide.

Yeah I was thinking it may be marginal, but worth a shot for fun. I like the looks of the .402 Fury star tip, but smallest order is a lot of 50 for $75. Thats pretty pricy just to test them to see if they shoot well. Maybe I will call them and see if they will sell a small pack of 10. Any full bore options you would recommend? I would need something that would fit without sizing preferably, since I don't own and really don't want to own a sizer. What about the Parker 275 Match Hunter or the 270 E-Max. Bob mentioned that he would customize them to fit if we order them in a specific size. It looks like someone else posted .4505 sized Parker on their barrel. Is it safe to say that they will all be the same, or is it like everything else in life?

Hey Razor, did you have Bob size these for you or did you do it at home? What are the odds my barrel is the same bore diam? Did you buy a full 50 or did you get a smaller lot? Using the 275 Match Hunter hollow base or standard base? The hollow base reminds me of the Thor bullets I used to shoot in my 50 cal. - Oh and at .4505 how hard was it to seat them compared to the Powerbelt? I measured a PB and they are .4450 exactly. It looks like the skirt is .4461 give or take.

The easiest bullet ive ever got to shoot sabotless is the Parker 275gr BE. The 300gr should also be no problem. The current BEs are .451-.4515 IIRC. My old stock BEs are .4505 but i dont have many of them left.

Save yourself a ton of grief if you go sabotless and buy a Swinglock adjustable sizing die. You will be 10 steps ahead of the game once you get the feel for it. The other option is under size to around .450 which is a custom die size. Knurl the bullets upto around .453 and them run them through a standard .451 or .452 die depending on what your barrel likes....This method works super well but it is a PITA.

I already had some of the Parker Match/Hunter 275 standard base. They measured out at .451 and were to tight for my barrel, I sized them to .4505 and they fit well. But I believe someone on here posted a pic from another site with a target and the guy said .451 fell down his barrel. So not sure if I would order them resized. Sorry not much help. They seated harder than the PowerBelt, which are very easy. I can seat them with hand just wrapped around ramrod and not on top.

Sounds like I need to call Bob then an see what he thinks. He can prob make a sizing kit for me with 4 or 5 sizes. I really dont want to get into sizing bullets, but who knows.

Thought I would share my boring project. If you hate the giant cumbersome packaging that has staples for teeth that bite you at least 4 times per shooting session, I found a $5.99 fix. Buy one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XLAWLO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 take some snips and cut Vs in the ends of the dividers. Takes up half the space and I have room for some primers in the end. The bullets snap in so they don't rattle around much but a thin layer of foam on the lid would fix it right up.

I know what you mean about the staples!

Ok, I've got the Arrowhead Gen2 replacement plug finalized. Should be available for sale in 3 weeks. It will just be a plug and modules to start. Will need to use a tool to pop modules out of plug.

I've got the concept done for the slotted bolt head. But what should be a really easy replacement is actually pretty challenging because of the limited space available and how the bolt head has to screw into bolt body. The simple way would have been to do a one piece design and just custom cut the slot on each bolt, but I really wanted an upgrade I could just ship to customers without any custom machining involved. I believe the self-timing system I've come up with will accomplish that. Stay tuned for more....
