My neighbor gave me some Fiocchi 616 209 primers, as he is switching over to Win 209 primers in his rifle. I am going to shoot with them to see how they work. IF they improve my groups, I may consider using them during ML season. In researching them, I have read that they may not work so well in cold temperatures in igniting Blackhorn 209. Does this have any truth to it? I would appreciate any and all input/experience you all have on this.

Thanks!

I (& several others)shot them for years in miserable cold snowy & rainy Michigan seasons. From regular gun season in mid November thru ML season into mid/late December
Carried them in the primer carrier pockets of my sling & gum stayed in back of the truck or in the garage during all hunting.
NEVER had an issue igniting BH209
Just make sure you have a BH209 compatible plug & that it’s completely clean.

Note....They will not fit in Knight breech plugs

Depends on what rifle/breechplug combination you are using. Some of the European Primers will not fit in the Knight, T/C, and other rifles. They are larger in diameter than the primer pockets. They are usually shorter in length, with the exception of the Nobel. These larger diameter primers will usually fit in the CVA breech plugs.

This chart is wrong on the Nobel primer diameter, they are actually 0.245" and are my preferred primer for the CVA breech plugs.

If your rifle/breech plug combination is headspaced for 0.300"+ long primers, which they all are from the factory, you will get blowback with the 0.294" long Fiocchi primers if they even fit in your breech plug. Blackhorn 209 does not like leaky ignition sources, especially in cold weather. Don't assume that because they work just fine in mild temps, that they are going to work in the middle of December when Mr. Big steps out in front of you. Several have found out the hard way, back in 2008. No need to make mistakes, when others before you have.
