Hi All, new muzzle-loader from BC Canada. Been shooting for a couple of years & enjoy mostly rifle & some pistol. You guys down south a so lucky with the access you have to suppliers & equipment. Much more restricted up here. Anyway I've just taken an interest in muzzle-loading initially ordered myself a Traditions Kentucky Rifle Kit. But until that gets built I bought a used 2014 CVA Accura MR (25" Barrel) to have fun with.
I'm currently totally confused by sabots, power belts, bullet sizes & such but hope that with your help I'll get to understand it all. Just ordered a CVA Blackhorn Powder Breech plug. I'd like to use powder rather than pellets, as there's more choice (here in Canada) & opportunity for experimenting. I'm only a target shooter atm but maybe down the road some hunting will be on the cards as I have hunting friends who are keen for me to go with them. Anyway that's about it don't want to bore you guys! Thanks for having me! LOL

Welcome aboard! There is a ton of good reading in the new to muzzleloading section. But feel free to ask questions specific to you. There are plenty of people here willing to help.

Hey Dave, welcome to the wonderful world of muzzleloading.:welcome::welcome::welcome:

Welcome! I am an old dog learning new tricks. In two months, my 2019 Whitetail season will be the first with a ML. At my age I know my seasons are numbered so I put myself on a fast-track of learning all I could about “best load for my Accura” as quickly as I could. I’ve been relentless in that respect. A group of MM members with unquestionable wisdom kinda let some air out of my balloon recently and politely told me it was ok to stop shopping for so many answers and start shooting and practicing what I had learned so far. They were spot-on.

I am a Google fanatic, that’s how I found modernmuzzleloader.com. If you were to Google, “best load ( or bullets) for Accura MR,” I will assure you that you’ll be led right back to MM. I found lots of interesting ML conversations online but this group is uniquely wise in their ways. It’s a never ending trip of ML education.

While you’re waiting for any replies to your post, you’ll find that tons of tips, testimonials, and recommendations are already in the archives. They’re as fresh as the past 24 hours and all the way back 10 years or so when some of these same members were educating new ML members with the same questions that you and I have. When you get the time, open the search box, click “more” and enter your term or phrase.

I’ll step aside and resist the urge to overwhelm you with my newbie stuff, but I’ll leave you with a personal tip that I demand of myself. Like me, you’ll get to the point when you’ll make decisions to develop your own technique. To the greatest extent possible, understand why you do what you do and why you use something. The best of what I learned was paying attention to members’ “why.” Be flexible enough to change if something doesn’t seem to fit you and your rifle. Good luck.

Thank you for your welcomes & RoJo for your comments. I too "research" a lot, the internet is an incredible resource, but one has to be wary of some of the advice out there. I have already done a lot of reading on ML & found a lot of helpful info. So thank you all for that!
I've just ordered a Blackhorn Breech plug for my Accura. More powder choice my local supplier only stocks White Hots in Pellet form, but has 3 or 4 loose powders. Similarly with projectiles only 3 pre-packaged sabot/bullet combos & one Powerbelt. It would be so nice to order from US suppliers (way more choice) but there are too many Gov't restrictions for US companies if exporting firearm items to Canada.

I’m assuming you can get Blackhorn 209? Which bullets/sabots can you purchase in Canada?

I know at my local Cabela's I can get 3 or 4 different FF Powders suitable for ML's. Independents don't carry much at all I'm guessing because ML doesn't seem that popular around here. Not sure if I can get actual Blackhorn but I know I need the BH Breech Plug so I can use any loose powder. As for the bullets not sure I think the ones I saw were "prepacked" Hornady (complete with Sabots) so still researching on what I need there. My local GC has a Black Powder Group so I will be talking to some of them to see where they get supplies from.
Sorry RoJo tried to quote your question in my reply but it didn't work, still getting used to the way posting works in ML.

You’ve made a good choice with the Blackhorn 209. It burns so much cleaner and opens up an almost unlimited choice of power options. After over 20 years hunting with muzzleloaders, I continue to experiment with powder loads and bullets. For the last couple of years I’ve been shooting Harvester PT Golds and they’ve done well with 100 grains volume of the BH209. I’m currently using CCI Magnum 209 primers but have successfully used Winchester’s in the blue box in prior years. Trying to find the best load for a rifle is always a challlenge, it’s also part of the fun in muzzleloading.

I'm slowly getting some supplies, I got some Federal Premium 209 Primers, (100 for Cdn$11), it says they are ML Primers. That's all they had so hope they'll work ok. Any comments on those? It may be a while before i get other supplies!

Those will work with 777 or Pyrodex, not so with bh209. Good luck.
