I do read, but usually the Iphone And I usually pray - for two things in particular. One of thanks for the beauty of this world, and the freedoms we have to experience it in so many ways. Second, for that big monster buck to show up!

I bring a book with my for when after a couple of hours things get dull Ill read a paragraph or two look around and go back to read ,always listening. I usually start my sit by saying a prayer thanking Him for my ability to be out here to enjoy nature. I may have missed a few over the years but comes rifle season I like to put in full days so a bit of reading breaks thing up.

I always have a paperback along on stand and will read a page then scan the area, read a page and scan.....

My stand has side walls so when reading with the book held below anyone's line of site I am not broadcasting with white pages. I also have a small Walkman type radio along with comfortable ear buds and will listen to music as well. I'm another that hits the stand well before daylight and I come out of it just before dark.

I also like to pray.Thanking the Lord for all my blessings. I just built the deluxe of tree stands and plan on equipping it with a Bible. I try to read it about 20 minutes a day. Great place to read the Bible and pray.

As a person who still hunts on the ground, I have never read, but I do reflect A LOT, on the beauty of the location, the sounds of the deer woods on a calm day, things I ave done in my life good and bad, my career in the AF, past relationships and what went wrong with them and what I could have done better, pray, and since I would much rather eat local beef, I pray for a decent deer, that it will not feed me, but my extended family and friends. What I DON'T do is take that precious time and worry about the future, or present day problems. They are other times for that stuff.

Even if I dont get one I usually come home in a better mood than I was in the day before, so the wife sometimes will TELL me to go hunt something, she has never, not let me go.

No I look for deer the whole time I'm out there..deer can pass by very quickly and you never even know it if your not paying attention.. Save the reading for at home.

Sure, depending on where my mind is at, I may read a bit while in the stand. It is absolutely true that I miss some opportunities with deer that pass by unnoticed although in the thick woods I hunt, I often hear them before I see them. Once I looked up from a book and a doe was not 25 yards away, right in full view. It was a damp day and particularly quiet. I like reading and with the liberal season we have in VA I can afford to be a little lazy during my sits. If I only had a two week season I think my attitude would change.

Long ago I once spent half an hour, on opening day, on semi-public federal (military) land, at the bottom of a tree, with a red headlamp, reading the instructions for assembling & emplacing the tree stand I'd bought the night before... does that count? (I'm a little more forward-thinking and methodical these days.)

I don't. But remember my brother-in-law started one year, he had a stroke and died the next year. Don't think they were related.

If I plan on trying to sit all day I'll take a Louis L'Amour paperback with me. I will read a paragraph then look around and repeat.

I will sometimes - but just off of the smartphone. Usually a casual research on firearm, powder, scope or some such. This site is one I’ll frequently scroll through.

Most of the time, I’d rather watch the wildlife and concentrate on the sounds around me. That’s why I’m out there.

But, occasionally, I’m under pressure from the job or other life stress, and I’ll be distracted enough that the reading or the ability to multitask with media helps me stay out longer.

Might read the weather or news on my phone. I'm afraid a book would divert me attention or worse, put me to sleep!
