I currently have a Knight mountaineer .52 with thumbhole stock. I do not like the feel of the stock it is very bulky and i do not enjoy carrying gun all day in woods. I thought I read that the disk extreme stock was interchangeable. My question is does the caliber make a difference with the stock? Can I use the 50 cal stock?

Should fit no problem as long as its a current production Knight stock. Caliber does not matter.

I have a mountaineer in a disc extreme thumbhole stock and it fits perfect too, I love it.

Mountaineer and LRH both have the forked lug. So as long as the stock takes a forked lug no further work is required. Older Extreme stocks are not cut out for the forked lug. New stocks from Knight are already inlet for them. Its listed right on the Knight website too. Ive put a LRH 52cal in an Elite stock. It fits but i would suggest some work to the barrel channel since the Elite contour is lighter. Just some minor sanding and some minor bedding for the Elite. Older Extremes just need a little material removed in the lug area and a small amount of bedding unless you prefer full length bedding.

The forked lug on my .45 cal Elite and the rectangle lug on my .50 cal Extreme MHC both use the same exact stock. They are the black ones shown, and the barrel channels are exactly the same.

The camo stock is from an earlier Extreme that I dropped my original D.I.S.C. .45 cal 1:20 twist into. It's obviously not inletted for the forked lug. The Extreme MHC will fit in that stock, but they are both a hair tighter, due to the base coat paint for the camo dip.

Real easy to see the difference, and it would not be hard to inlet for the forked lug.

Someone asked about a picture of the forked lug a week or two ago, these were some 10+ year old pics I busted out of Photobucket jail.

If you want a Mountaineer barrel to partially float like it does in a Mountaineer stock its not gunna happen in an Elite stock. I tried and a dollar bill gets a couple inches in and stops. A few minutes with some sand paper around a dowel rod should fix it right up.

The Elite i bought for parts was close

I have a mountaineer 50 cal with t/h stock and I took some sand paper and thinned down the stock. Then I took some 000-0000 steel wool to finish the stock. Now it fite and feels really good.

When i get mine all wrapped up i will probably add a little bedding. IIRC its been suggested to go maybe an inch or two infront of the lug. Depends if you got any rocking. Ive shimmed the front fork part of the lug and that works also. It causes the barrel to lift up and the action to go down. Just a tiny square cut from a soda can.

i am no gun smith i almost think it would be easier for me to sell the and buy a rifle that fits me better. I really waited to late in the season and need a gun for the season.

My Rifle didn’t come Free Floated, It was actually quite Snug. I wish now that i had taken a Pic of what i did to Free Float my Mountaineer, All i did was add a Shim under the Retaining Screw Lug, Which is kind of a Fork Shape iirc? Had i of Kept my Rifle, i was planning to Have Matt Whaley Pillar Bed it for me, But it sure worked good for me the way i had it :lewis: It shot so well that I couldn’t bring myself to mess with it. I wouldn’t hesitate to do the Shim thing again, VERY SIMPLE, and Worked

Don't over-complicate it. Buy an extreme stock and be done. It will be fine, no gunsmithing needed. Then you can even sell your thumbhole if you want, and recoup some $. You can find stocks online several places used, or always buy a new one.

Yep, just get a new Extreme stock for $140. It will drop in. Shoot it before you decide if it needs anything else. I did nothing to one of mine and it shoots fantastic. Another i made a small shim in minutes for the bottom of the lug cutout. Placed it just under the "fork". Not the entire lug. Worked like a champ.

Exact same thing I speak of in Post #11, It didn’t take Much either, i just now measured the Shim Stock i used, i used a Very thin .020 piece under the Lug/Forks, I actually punched a Hole in my Shim for my Action Retaining Screw to go through, this simple procedure FULLY Floated my Mountaineer Barrel, as shown in the Video above, I could easily Slide the Bill all the Way back to the Lug :lewis:

Im going to try a little reversible experiment with my 45 1-20

Shim the fork
Add a piece of foil tape to the flat barrel channel area just behind the lug.

That should lift both sides just slightly but a tad more under the forks. Foil tape is super thin. Its like .001 to .005 without the backing. It should leave an impression on the tape with the backing.

I appreciate all the feedback. I think i am going to try to sell the rifle to a friend who is interested. Then pick up an Ultra light or possibly a locally made rifle. Do knights hold their value? The gun has been shot less then a dozen times.

52cal overall is not popular although its a great sabot. They handle stiff loads very very well. Only Knight sells the sabots though. Just recently Knight had a sale on 52cal Mountaineers for $599. They run 52cal sales quite a bit. If/When they stop selling 52cal rifles im pretty sure MMP will offer the sabots.

There tons of really good .458 bullets for them and some .475s but those can get stupid expensive even for a XTP. A .475 325gr XTP is going for almost a buck a pop. Speers 325gr is less than half that.
