I have an older Prohunter, the one with the nut on top of the breech plug, not the knurled end. Needs a socket type tool to instal.

I decided to replace the breech plug after several years of shooting.

The new breech plug twists in but does not tighten far enough in order for primer to drop in and gun to close. The original one, twists in straight to "12 o'clock". The new one only twists in to about "11 o clock". And it is tight, as in there is no way to tighten it anymore to get it to "12 o'clock". I greased both the gun threads and plug and it didn't help. I also took the O ring off the plug to see if it would twist in further and that didn't help. It feels like it is at the end of the threads and cannot physically be twisted in any further.

So I bought another new breech plug ($80 a piece in Canada), and this one slides in real easy and twists too far to "1 o'clock" giving me the same problem but on the opposite side, the primer won't seat in properly in order for the gun to close.

I called TC and they could provide no assistance other than sending the gun in which is near impossible as I am in Canada.

Had a couple gunsmiths look at it and they think it is the plugs not the gun, which I think is the case as well, but TC says the plugs are all the exact same.

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

As I understand, this is the “Speed Breech” plug (see picture below)?
Just want to ensure exactly which breech plug as there are a couple.

If its the 1/4 turn, you sometimes have to push them in hard with the UP flat spot up, then turn them 1/4 turn right, if the photo walkingeagle posted is the correct plug. Stop when the extractor portion is straight down. See what happens.
Measure all surfaces and compare the new to the old.

Extractor portion being the cut out in the nut at the bottom??

That's the problem, I cannot twist the plug in far enough to get the extractor portion straight up and down. If straight up is 12 o'clock, this plug stops about 11 o'clock.

I may be reading this wrong, but the extractor cutout goes down when fully seated.

Measure your old and this plug to determine any differences.
See if the old plug seats properly

My old plug works fine. When I put the new plug in and turn it clockwise to lock it in, it does not turn far enough for the extractor cut out to be straight down at the bottom. The top of the BP is basically at 11 o'clock as opposed straight up and down.

Have you measured both?

I've went through a ton of them and thankfully never had your experience with this one. I will say a couple went in hard at first, but I had to push like hell while turning them and they did all go in. I'd try another new one.

I've tried 2 different ones so far and will try a third tomorrow. It makes no sense to me.

I'm a little stumped on this. I've had and shot Encore platform rifle since they hit the market. Never ran into this type of situation.
Mic them all.

First plug doesn't twist in far enough. Second one twists in too far. Trying a third tomorrow. Original works good but want to replace it.

I went through them like water for a number of years and I will say that I have had a couple that wanted to go to 6:30 or even 7:00 past. They were never an issue for me. I replaced 5 or 6, maybe a couple more each year.
I haven't played with the Encore platform in a number of years now, but if I were still shooting them, I'd change the barrel and entire ignition system, knowing what I know now.
