I need some advice. I'm shooting a 54 cal. hunterbolt . 90 grains of 777,I made the switch to conicals this year.ordered some 300 gr. Real's.I didn't put in the range time I felt I needed to feel comfortable with them.Deer season came around, I grabbed some great plains bullets. loaded up and went hunting. I checked that the bullet was still seated on the powder charge about my 4th hunt. everything was ok at that time, the next weekend I did it again and the bullet had moved off the powder about 3'' [yikes]. I'm thinking I need to patch the loose bullet with teflon plumbers tape. I need something that be carried in my hunting pack for a quick reload. If I used teflon tape would lube be needed? any suggestions?

I have heard of Teflon Tape for this, But have never tried it? I have used a Thin strip of Onion Skin paper layed Across the Bore, and push the Lubed Bullet Down, They Go down GOOD N TIGHT and Stay put. I tested this method for Cold Clean bore Accuracy Several Times, it had NO Negative effect :lewis:

Like this, Except a Grease Groove Bullet. 9# onion skin paper is thin stuff at .002 Single

So, that means I can do the same to tighten up a maxiball

ABSOLUTELY!! It will work like a Charm! :lewis: The Maxi Ball can be Bad about Loosening up on the Way Down the Bore, Due to it only having the 1 oversize Band, (Front, “Driving Band”) And the Use of Really Soft PURE lead. Use The technique Above and it will fix it :lewis:

Something else i did LONG Ago, it was a Bit much, Quite a Bit much actually :) But If you can get it down, it won’t budge til you ask it to :D

Better yet, get a bullet that fits your bore.

Art, Not the Case. This can actually happen with TIGHT Bullets that fit VERY Well, If they are made of PURE Soft lead they Can “Strip/give up” Going down the Bore. Say a Maxi for Example, they usually Require a Bump from a Short Starter to get them Started, and they Feel fine til you get about 1/2 Way down, then you feel them Getting easier (Looser) and looser, And by the time you get to the Powder they Can Be loose! I’ve had it happen MANY Times, with MANY different Bores, BRAND SPANKING NEW BORES!!

I started a thread on this WAAAAAY Back, looking for an Answer? Some of The Answers i got back then were amusing, from guy’s that i felt Should have known an Answer? NOBODY HERE had an Answer? I had to figure it out on my Own :lewis: My Fix, i had to DO AWAY with PURE SOFT Lead in Certain Bores and move up to an Alloy, i chose 1-40 Which is Stil Reasonably Soft, Yet noticeably harder than Pure lead. The EXACT same Maxi Mold that Cast the PURE lead bullets that Loosen up going down a Bore? They Now HOLD ANY Bore SUPER GOOD when Cast of 1-40 Alloy

So it’s DEFINITELY NOT that a bullet is to Small, and not the Correct fit, it’s Not that at all!! Some Bores (GLASSY/SILK Smooth) Might Hold a Soft PURE lead bullet Better than another Bore that has More Tooling Marks, rougher in General?

That .45 Green Mountain LRH Barrel in the Video above has a Bore that Looks like a MIRROR inside, I bought that Barrel Brand New and it has Shot a Large Diet of Paper Patch Bullets, That bore is SILKY SMOOTH, Yet a Soft PURE lead bullet stil “Strips out/gives up” going down the Bore. My 400 Dollar Rice Barrel is Even Worse about this. The ONLY Barrel i had that would Hold a Soft PURE lead Bullet “Reasonably well” was my Old Stainless .50 Cal Green Mountain LRH, The rest of my ENTIRE Gun Safe of Rifles are like the Above. Again, it’s NOT that the Bullet is the incorrect Size, That Has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with it!! It’s PURE Soft Lead Bullets “Stripping Out, giving up” When being pushed down through the Riflings of the MAJORITY of Bores ;) I’ve Been there, Dealt with it A BUNCH!

And last, BUT NOT LEAST, NOT ALL PURE LEAD IS EQUAL IN HARDNESS!! The ONLY thing in Common with ALL PURE SOFT Lead is BHN 5 :) But it can, And ABSOLUTELY DOES Vary in Hardness!! Look at my Lead Hardness Chart Below, I use a Cabin Tree Lead Hardness Tester so i am the “Dial Reading” Column. Take note that ANYTHING .015-.035 on My Dial is Considered PURE LEAD, That is a Fairly WIDE RANGE!! Now think about this, If i bought PURE Lead and it ended up Being on the Softest End, .015 on my Dial. And i had another Batch of PURE LEAD that was at the Upper end .035 on my Dial, Which do you think is Gonna get loose Quicker Going down a Bore?

I have come Across some REALLY SOFT, “Buttery soft” Lead. AGAIN, NOT ALL PURE LEAD IS EQUAL IN HARDNESS!!
