Hello All,

I am from south central Wisconsin, and just got an old Knight Muzzleloader from gentleman I worked for as a teenager. He became a friend/mentor of sorts, and he introduced me to dog training and duck hunting. Looking back it seams as though we spent as much time in the field together as I did working for him mowing lawns.

I can't ask my friend anything about the gun, as he is 83 and suffering from sever dementia at this point. Apparently, He wanted it given to me years ago along with some other guns, but family issues being what they are... I only got the muzzleloader. Apparently, It would not fire and the breach plug is seized. (that is the information that was passed to me)

I have never owned a muzzleloader before, but have shot and loaded a break action CVA (might have been a wolf) that a friend has.

I already disassembled and cleaned it. No issues with getting the breach plug out but the flash hole was completely plugged. Thankfully, there was no powder or sabot hanging out in the barrel when I took it apart. (That is what I was expecting when I was told it would not fire and the BP is seized) There is also some nasty brown/red residue that is dried on the action and breach plug in some places... Not sure what it is as none of the standard gun cleaners I have will knock it loose.

I believe, it is the Original D.I.S.C. as it says "KNIGHT D.I.S.C" on the barrel and has the original disc style breach plug. (no nipple like the disc extreme)

I have some questions that I will be posting in the in-line forum as well... Sorry for the book!

:welcome:To the group Aaron. I’m sure you will treasure the disc rifle, I know I would. Good luck.

Welcome aboard Aaron! Sounds like a great rifle, you will find plenty of good advise on here to get it up and running!
Happy shooting!

You came to the right place for help with your Knight. There’s guys on here that I would put their knowledge of Knights up against anybody. Glad you found us and welcome aboard.

Welcome. Sounds like the gun wasn’t cleaned & preserved well, understandable with the owner’s health issues.

For starters I would continue to get the gun & bore as clean as able, check some threads on restoring it to the best shape possible. If you get it clean enough you can consider new ignition options to reliably shoot Blackhorn 209 powder. Could also shoot the other propellants too.

Thankfully the bore is perfectly clean... the brown stuff is on the outside of the action and hex of the breach plug.... I have not been able to get the gun back out and try again, but I am guessing it is just a dried grease of some kind. He had some strange "old school" products that he would use for different things and swore buy.

I think this is the series of events that lead me getting the gun. My friend greased up the barrel and plug heavy before putting it away after the last time he used it. Knowing him He might have even packed the flash hole with "grease" so it didn't corrode... years later... His son took it out to shoot it, did a quick clean and swab of the barrel... loaded it up. Primer popped, but no bang... He extracted the bullet/sabot dumped the powder... then removed the bolt and tried to take the plug out. He couldn't with just the tool and his fingers... So not wanting to put effort into it and knowing His father wanted to leave something to me... broken muzzle loader. (His sons and Him muzzleloader hunted together for years, so both should have known how to clear up the issues that I found... and both have 1 of this exact same model and no kids)

I used a pen stuck in the hole at the far end of the breech plug tool, with that little bit of extra leverage the plug dis-lodged/popped and spun out the rest with fingers. I will post up a picture if it does not clean up after trying again.
