So this is my last muzzleloader. I’m still building so maybe some help from other members here. It’s a knight .45 cal fast twist 1:20 barrel. I put a Williams FG AG peep on the back with a mount I made myself. I’ve never owned or shot a .45 but everything I’ve read is they are incredibly accurate with the right load. Right now I’m going to use the bare primer system until I can install a western kit.

A question I have for other members is trigger recommendations? I tried to get one from Timney and they said they don’t sell to the public. Knight hasn’t hardly worked with me at all and I can’t find any other trigger maker out there that makes one to fit the Mountaineer. Anybody know where to find a Mountaineer trigger?

What barrel is that? My Mountaineer 45 1-20 is slightly different. The breach opening is not chamfered like that and my bolt knob has a hole in the center. Cant remember if my Super DISC is the same or not.

I was under the impression Knight will now sell the Timney trigger but they wanted like $160 or $180 for them. Vehr wont sell the older trigger either as far as i know but i never called and asked

So this barrel actually came with my Knight long range hunter when I bought it used. It’s almost identical to my .50 cal Mountaineer. The bolt is the one that came with my .50 cal Mountaineer in bare primer. I put a western kit on my .50 for Idaho and Oregon muzzleloader hunts but I run bare primer in short range weapon hunts.

Knight sells just that barrel now. I bought one. Im almost done building mine. Just waiting on my scope rings now. Bedded the Lehigh 1 piece rail last nite. Older Mountaineer 45s are 1-30. Not 1-20. They just recently starting selling the 1-20 barrel kits.

My breach is not chamfered like that though and my Serial# is below 200.

Nice looking set up! I remember they used to do 1:30. I’m planning on working up a load with no excuses 385 lead conical and see how it goes. I’m hoping with the longer heavier bullet it will work well in this barrel.

When I called the person I worked with wasn’t real enthusiastic about selling me a trigger. Said they couldn’t ship it to me and that it would haft to go through a dealer. So they could ship me a entire gun direct but not a trigger!?

Its cheaper to buy a complete Extreme and sell off the barrel as a kit for $200. You would have $300 + shipping in all the parts if you could get $200 for the barrel.

Extreme in 50cal is $499 right now but i think they want $60 to ship it.

Good point. I have thought about that. Do the barrels sell very well? Maybe I could get the one with the stock you want, keep the trigger and send the stock your way

Just sharing some thoughts....

Neither Timney or Knight can sell a bare trigger to an individual any longer because of the liability they could incur if the trigger got installed wrong or the trigger pull were adjusted incorrectly.

A LRH barrel is not the same as the newer Mountaineer barrel. Your LRH barrel should be a 26" barrel. The Mountaineer is 27" and is said to have tighter specs than the older DISC barrels. The LRH barrel has fluting but it is different than the Mountaineer

Also in Idaho and Oregon - you can not use a primer for ignition - so I think you are saying you are using 'caps' either #11 or Musket.

Hope I have not messed this whole thing up.

OK - I think I am confused with information you have offered in other posts...

The barrel in the picture is what I have on my long range hunter in .50 cal. The gentleman who sold it to me also had the .45 Mountaineer barrel that he was using in the LRH stock. The thumb hole wood stock I put the .45 Mountaineer barrel in I already had from my .50 cal Mountaineer that I had put a UL stock on. Hopefully that clears it up a bit. My other posts have the pictures.

You are correct, I am using #11’s when I hunt muzzleloader in Idaho and Oregon. However Idaho has a few short range weapons hunts, for example McCall unit 24, that allows you to use 209’s, etc. So I switch my setup depending on the hunt or state. Sorry to confuse, still trying to learn how to post in forums.

Also thank you for clearing up the trigger frustration. I didn’t get why they wouldn’t send me a trigger that attaches with one screw but they would send me the entire gun. I had to figure liability played in there somewhere. Thank you for filling me in.

I'm not sure what you mean, you can buy a pre-set trigger direct from Timney, maybe not a Knight but a host of other triggers. Knight better start getting with the times, a lot of people like to buy parts and do the assembly themselves.

I told him to keep those @#$%^&* parts . My order was close to $200 at that point and i wasnt done yet either !!!

That’s what confused me too, I have installed several triggers in my centerfire rifles, and there are several manufacturers. Besides you already take the trigger off and reinstall every time you clean it after shooting anyway. I have noticed places like Midway, Natchez, and Sportsmans warehouse not carrying nearly as much of Knights accessories lately. I’m afraid they need to get with the times as well, they do make great rifles but if it’s hard to maintain or get parts for people aren’t going to buy them.

Have you ever tried to buy a trigger directly from any other brand of ML? Not from aftermarket vendors or resellers but directly from the company that made the rifle? Other than Doc White im not aware of any that will sell them. Timney is under contract with Knight and Vehr was also. Why Vehr chose not to offer it afterward, i have no idea. I keep hoping TriggerTech will offer something but thats a pipe dream.

I know of several people that needed Savage parts and Savage would not sell them directly either unless they installed them.

All good points. It would seem like if any good trigger manufacturer would make after market triggers for muzzleloaders like they do for centerfires they would have a new market for themselves.

I would be the first inline if TriggerTech offered a trigger for DISC type rifles. Nothing wrong with a Timney. I just really like the simplicity of the TriggerTech. Its basically idiot proof and almost creep free right out of the box.
