A friend called and ask to use my Thompson pro hunter I dont use it as much and shoot my knight all the time,I went to get powder and could not find 777 in fffg and the only powder i could locate was 777 i ffg,and what a bad day at the range, the groups never did open up in windage but would string 3 inches some times up and down when I took the breach plug out I found a lot of remaining powder in the the barrel right at the bottom, has anyone else had these problems, and is this typical,I can only blame the powder cant see any other reason.I thought maybe the scope went bad, part of the problem of living in the hills getting somr things on short notice.

What powder have you used in the past 777 3-f?I don't think it's your powder 777 is very dirty and will clog a barrel in no time I have found for best results to run a semi moistened patch down the barrel followed by a dry one With sighting in on a 90 % clean barrel will insure your shot at hunting will be where you have sighted it in I then go home pull the breech plug and clean the barrel VG grease the breech plug that way you are sure you will get no corrosion To leave a barrel with any 777 residue in it is asking for corrosion

No Im using 2 f which I've never used before,I was thinking that might b it,I always use 3f in my Encore, didn't think there would be that much differents.

You're correct. There should not be a significant difference between 2f and 3f.

Perhaps not seated correctly or perhaps you have some bad powder. I don't hear of bad powder often with T7.

I have one gun that uses 209 primers, everything else is setup for #11's. I have also noticed some unburned powder in that rifle if I don't swab between shots. Never seen it in the #11 guns.

Only ever shot 777 ffg and never have had an issue other than impossible to get a third bullet rammed down a dirty bore (tight Omega barrel).

I think what you are seeing is the crud ring and just crud through out your
barrle not unburnt powder. The only difference between 2f and 3f is you will have higher velocity's with the 3f than the 2f when useing the same amount volume to volume. And again every gun is different and your gun may not like the 2f as much as the 3f. But try swabbing after every shot like Mr Lee said you are not seating the bullet past that crud ring and your seating pressure is not the same every time because you are not past that ring and that will make a huge difference in the accuracy.
Good luck and let us know how things work out.

If your using the same charge, could just be your barrel doesn’t like it. 2f is gonna be slower than 3f even with the same “weight” charge because of the smaller grains. Try increasing your charge 5 grains, or maybe you did that. Barrel heat and breathing are the two main causes of vertical strings....
